Chapter 19 - A New Chapter BeginsAs winter settled over the rolling hills of Athens, coating the farmhouse roof in a pristine blanket of white snow, our lives continued to blossom with warmth and laughter.

Lucas was thriving in his new elementary school, winning first place in the county science fair for a miniature volcano model we built together in the garage. Chloe had discovered a passion for ballet, and every Tuesday evening, I sat proudly in the front row of the local community center watching her twirl across the wooden floor in her pink tutu.

One snowy Friday evening, while wrapping Christmas presents in the living room after the kids had gone to sleep, there was a gentle knock at our front door.

Frowning—since we lived far down a private gravel road and rarely received unexpected visitors at 9:00 PM—I walked to the door, resting my hand discreetly on my service weapon.

I peered through the peephole.

Standing on the porch was a woman in her early thirties with warm hazel eyes, wearing a dark wool winter coat dusted with snowflakes, holding a small clipboard and a thermos of hot coffee.

I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open a few inches.

"Can I help you?" I asked politely.

"Good evening, Deputy Miller," the woman smiled warmly, her breath pluming in the cold night air. "My name is Elena Vance. I’m the new director of the county pediatric advocacy center that your foundation recently partnered with. I know it's late, but I was reviewing the case intake logs from your department, and I wanted to personally drop off the updated compliance paperwork before Monday morning."

I blinked in surprise, then smiled, stepping back to open the door wide.

"Elena Vance? You’re the one who spearheaded the state grant for our new counseling wing," I said, recognizing her name from our departmental memos. "Come in out of the cold. Let me get you a real cup of coffee."
