Chapter 21 - Springtime PromisesSpring arrived in Ohio with an explosion of color—vibrant tulips pushing through the thawed earth, apple blossoms painting the orchard in shades of pale pink, and the sweet, earthy scent of rain-soaked soil filling the morning air.

On a bright Saturday in April, Elena and I took the kids to the local county park for a morning of kite-flying and picnic lunches.
While Lucas and Chloe chased a red-and-yellow dragon kite across the rolling green lawn, Elena and I walked side-by-side along the winding gravel path near the duck pond.
"David," Elena said gently, stopping near a blooming weeping willow tree. "I’ve been meaning to tell you... working with you and your children this past year has changed my life. I never expected to find a family out here."
I stopped, turning to face her. The sunlight caught the golden highlights in her dark brown hair, and her expression was filled with an honest, beautiful vulnerability.
"Elena, neither did I," I answered, my voice steady and sincere. "After everything that happened... I honestly believed my heart was permanently locked away. But you brought sunlight back into this house. You love my kids as if they were your own."
"Because they hold a piece of my heart," Elena whispered.
I reached out, gently taking her hand in mine. Her fingers intertwined naturally with mine, as if they had belonged there all along.
"Will you stay?" I asked softly. "Will you build this home with us, permanently?"

Elena’s eyes welled with happy tears, and a radiant smile broke across her face.
"Yes, David," she whispered, leaning into my embrace. "Yes, a thousand times yes."
