Chapter 23 - The Intruder in the OrchardThe threat materialized on a sultry Friday night in late July.

Cicadas buzzed loudly in the oak trees outside, and a warm summer breeze rustled the curtains of our bedroom. Elena was fast asleep beside me, her breathing soft and even.
At 2:14 AM, the silent-alarm sensor on our orchard gate chimed softly on my bedside tactical monitor.
I was awake instantly.
I slid out of bed without waking Elena, slipped on my tactical boots, and retrieved my service Glock from the biometric nightstand safe.
Moving with the silent, disciplined stealth of my years in law enforcement, I slipped out the back kitchen door into the cool darkness of the yard.
Shadows stretched long beneath the moonlight. As I moved past the rows of apple trees, I caught the distinct crunch of dry gravel near the old wooden tool shed.
"Federal agents! Freeze where you are!" I shouted, stepping out from behind a thick oak trunk with my weapon drawn and flashlight blazing.
A figure darted out from the side of the shed, sprinting toward the perimeter fence. It was a stocky man wearing a dark hoodie and tactical pants.
"Stop right there!" I roared, giving chase.
He vaulted the wooden fence with surprising agility, but as he landed on the other side, the federal surveillance team stationed down the gravel road converged instantly, tackling him into the ditch with practiced precision.

Agent Vance stepped out of an unmarked SUV, snapping handcuffs onto the struggling intruder.
"Good catch, Deputy," Agent Vance called out, shining her flashlight on the man's snarling face. "Viktor Vance, welcome to America. Your flight home is going to be a federal penitentiary cell."
