Chapter 11 - The Live Feed ExposedThe blue-cased smartphone lay face up on the polished dark floor of the kitchen, its screen glowing with an active, unpaused recording timestamp.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped wild animal. As a sheriff’s deputy, I had seen my share of cruelty, domestic neglect, and calculated malice, but seeing it inflicted upon my own flesh and blood—my five-year-old daughter Chloe and my eight-year-old son Lucas—shattered my composure entirely.

Karen stood across the kitchen island, her sophisticated blonde hair impeccably styled, her grey silk blouse unwrinkled by the chaos. For a fleeting second, her eyes flicked downward toward the phone.

Then, her expression hardened into cold defiance.

"You're making a mountain out of a molehill, David," Karen snapped, crossing her arms with an air of unearned superiority. "The children are dramatic. They throw tantrums. I was simply teaching them table manners and discipline. Every good household needs structure."

"Structure?" I echoed, my voice dropping into a low, terrifying baritone that made the air in the room freeze.

I knelt down, my fingers trembling slightly as I picked up the phone. I pressed stop on the recording, but before doing so, I swiped back through the gallery.

Folder after folder appeared on the screen.

Folder: Kitchen_Discipline_04. Folder: Basement_Timeout_12. Folder: Hallway_Stand_08.

There weren't just two videos. There were dozens. A whole library of systemic, targeted psychological and physical abuse recorded over the six months since Karen had moved into our home.

Lucas buried his face into my uniform jacket, his small shoulders shaking as he clutched my sheriff's badge. Chloe whimpered softly, wiping red spaghetti sauce from her cheek with the back of her dirty sleeve.

"Dad... she locked us in the pantry yesterday for six hours," Lucas whispered, his voice muffled against my chest. "She said if we cried, she'd throw away our toys."

Karen’s face flickered with a sudden flash of panic, though she quickly tried to mask it behind an arrogant smirk. "Don't listen to them, David. They lie constantly. They want you all to themselves."

I stood up slowly, towering over her. The restraint I had maintained for years as a law enforcement officer evaporated, replaced by a cold, searing fury.

"You're done, Karen," I whispered, pulling my department radio from my belt. "Dispatch, this is Deputy Miller. I need an immediate unit and child protective services expedited to my residential address. Code three."
