Chapter 28 - The Sunset ReceptionThe reception was held on the expansive lawn behind the farmhouse, illuminated by miles of twinkling fairy lights strung through the oak trees.

Tables were laden with slow-roasted barbecue brisket, fresh farm-to-table salads, warm artisan bread, and a magnificent four-tier vanilla wedding cake decorated with spun-sugar apple blossoms.

During the toasts, Captain Reynolds stood up with a glass of champagne in hand, tapping his fork gently against his crystal flute.

"Most of you know David as a dedicated deputy and a fearless investigator," Captain Reynolds announced, his voice carrying clearly across the lawn. "But what I admire most about him is his heart. He walked through the darkest storm a father could ever face, and instead of letting bitterness consume him, he emerged stronger, kinder, and more devoted than ever. And to Elena—thank you for bringing our favorite deputy and his wonderful children the happiness they so richly deserve."

The guests raised their glasses in a toast, and Elena leaned over, pressing a tender kiss against my cheek.

Later, as the acoustic band struck up a slow, romantic melody, I pulled Elena onto the wooden dance floor built over the grass.

We swayed gently beneath the starlit sky, surrounded by the laughing faces of our children, our parents, and our truest friends.

The past was finally put to rest, wrapped in forgiveness and buried deep beneath the earth where it could never hurt us again.
