Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH|

Daniel Cross arrived at the motel the following morning carrying two coffees and the confidence of a man who believed he could explain anything.
Marco met him in the parking lot.
"You accessed my father's ledger."
Daniel glanced at the security cameras.
"Can we talk inside?"
"No."
Daniel sighed.
"Then ask your questions."
"Who copied the ledger?"
"I did."
"Why?"
"Because someone else was going to steal it."
Marco stepped closer.
"Who?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"Eleanor."
Marco's jaw tightened.
"She is supposed to be dead."
Daniel looked at him for a long moment.
"You really believed that?"
Marco did not answer.
Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a thin folder.
"Your mother staged her death three years ago. The stroke was real, but she survived. The funeral was conducted with a substituted body from a private facility. I discovered the truth when I reviewed the estate documents."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Eleanor had evidence that could destroy you."
"What evidence?"
"Payments to officials. Undisclosed properties. Contracts that connected your legitimate companies to men you should never have done business with."
Marco stared at him.
"You let me believe my wife and daughter were dead."
Daniel's face tightened.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
"That excuse is getting old."
"I know."
For once, Daniel did not defend himself.
He admitted that he had signed the altered death documents under pressure. Eleanor had threatened to expose the family's financial crimes and frame Marco for the clinic fire. Daniel believed that keeping the records hidden would prevent a war.
Instead, his silence had allowed Eleanor to maintain control.
"What does she want now?" Marco asked.
"The ledger contains a second set of accounts. Your father created them to track money Eleanor was moving without his knowledge. Those accounts identify the people who arranged the fire."
"And Sophia?"
"She wants the accounts because they prove Eleanor cheated her out of the businesses she was promised. She intends to sell the information to your rivals."
Marco studied him.
"Why should I trust you?"
"You shouldn't."
Daniel placed a small flash drive on the hood of the car.
"That's everything I recovered. Copies of the financial records, clinic invoices, and the original guardianship agreement. If anything happens to me, send it to the federal prosecutor whose name is on the final page."
Marco glanced at the document.
The prosecutor was a woman named Rachel Hayes, known for pursuing organized crime cases without accepting political favors.
"You're handing me evidence that could send half my family to prison."
"I'm handing you a choice."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"You can protect the empire, or you can protect your daughter. You may not be able to do both."
Marco looked toward the motel window.
Isabella was watching them.
"Did you help Eleanor hide Lily?" he asked.
Daniel hesitated.
"I helped move the child once. I was told she would be safer away from you."
"You believed that?"
"No. I wanted to believe it."
Marco's fist tightened, but he did not strike him.
"Get out of my sight."
Daniel nodded and walked away.
Then he stopped.
"Marco?"
"What?"
"There's something else in those records. A transfer made two months ago. A payment to someone listed as the emergency guardian of a child named Lily Duca."
Marco went still.
"Who received it?"
Daniel looked him in the eyes.
"Your father."
"My father has been dead for twelve years."
"I know."
Daniel left.
Marco stood beside the car, staring at the flash drive.
His father had supposedly died in a boating accident when Marco was thirty.

But the payment record carried his father's private identification code.
And it had been authorized two months ago.
