Chapter 14 - THE GIRL WHO LEFT A MAP|

The call came from Elena.

Lily had disappeared from the protected vehicle while the guards were distracted by a delivery truck. The doors had not been forced. No one had heard a struggle.

She had simply vanished.

Marco returned to the vehicle and found Lily's notebook on the seat.

One page had been torn out.

Another contained a drawing of the Manhattan waterfront, with a red circle around an abandoned ferry terminal.

Beneath it, Lily had written a word she had never written before.

HOME.

Isabella stared at the page.

"That's where Eleanor took me after the clinic."

Marco turned toward her.

"You were there?"

"For three days. Before they moved me to Saint Agnes."

"Why would Lily go there?"

Isabella touched the drawing.

"Because she remembers it."

Marco ordered Victor to send men to the terminal, but he refused to rush inside without knowing what awaited them.

Catherine studied the drawing.

"There's an old service tunnel beneath the terminal. It connects to a warehouse owned by Northstar."

"Can you get us in?"

"Yes."

They arrived shortly after sunset.

The terminal stood dark against the river, its windows shattered and its doors chained. Inside, dust covered the ticket counters. A broken clock hung above the waiting area.

Marco followed the map down a narrow staircase.

At the bottom, he found a blue ribbon tied to a pipe.

Then another.

Lily had left a trail.

They reached a warehouse filled with old furniture and sealed containers. In the center stood a small table with three chairs.

A plate of food sat on the table.

Beside it was Lily's silver pendant.

Marco picked it up.

A voice came from the shadows.

"She was always a clever child."

Eleanor stepped into the light.

She was no longer pretending to be frail. She stood straight, her cane resting against one shoulder, her eyes bright with cold intelligence.

Two armed men stood behind her.

"Where is my daughter?" Marco demanded.

"Safe."

"Show me."

"First, the ledger."

Marco held up the flash drive.

"I have copies."

Eleanor smiled.

"Of course you do. You're your father's son."

"Why did you fake your death?"

"Because you were becoming difficult to control."

"Why Lily?"

"Because the trust belongs to her. Through her, it belongs to the family."

"You mean it belongs to you."

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"Families survive because someone is willing to make unpleasant decisions."

"You burned a clinic."

"I protected an empire."

"You destroyed my marriage."

"You destroyed your marriage when you chose Isabella over the family."

Marco took a step forward.

Eleanor raised her hand, and one of the guards brought Lily into the room.

The girl looked frightened but unharmed.

Marco started toward her.

Eleanor pressed the barrel of a gun against Lily's shoulder.

"Stop."

He stopped.

Lily stared at him, then at Eleanor.

She slowly raised her hand and pointed toward the ceiling.

Marco followed her gaze.

A red light blinked above the central beam.

A recording device.

Eleanor noticed it too.

"What is that?"

Lily pointed again.

Then she spoke.

Her voice was small, strained, and unfamiliar after so many years of silence.

"Everybody can hear you."

Eleanor went perfectly still.

Marco felt his heart break and mend at the same time.

"Lily?"

The child looked at him.

"Daddy."

One word.

One word he had imagined hearing in a thousand dreams.

Eleanor's hand trembled.

Lily continued, louder now.

"You said Grandma was dead. You said Mommy was dead. You said Daddy was bad."

Her voice broke.

"But you lied."

Eleanor lunged toward the ceiling camera.

Victor's men stormed the warehouse from both entrances.

The guards dropped their weapons.

Marco rushed to Lily and pulled her into his arms.

For the first time, she held him without fear.

But as Victor secured Eleanor, she leaned toward Marco and whispered one final sentence.

"You think you've won because the recording exists."

May you like

She smiled.

"Ask your daughter what she saw in the room beneath Saint Agnes."
