Chapter 10 - THE COURTROOM OF LIES|

By nine the next morning, the courthouse was crowded with reporters, attorneys, and people who had spent years pretending the Duca family was respectable.

Eleanor Duca arrived in a wheelchair, wearing a black suit and a pearl necklace. She looked frail enough to inspire sympathy and composed enough to command the room.

Sophia walked beside her.

Marco entered through a side corridor with Isabella, Lily, Victor, and Daniel.

He had spent the night making copies of every document Daniel had recovered. The evidence was not enough to convict Eleanor of every crime, but it was enough to challenge her guardianship petition.

The hearing began shortly after ten.

Eleanor's attorney described her as a devoted grandmother who had spent six years protecting a traumatized child from a dangerous father.

Marco's attorney rose.

"Your Honor, the petition is based on the claim that Mr. Duca's daughter died six years ago. We have medical records proving the report was falsified."

Eleanor's attorney objected.

The judge reviewed the documents.

"Who is the witness?"

"Grace Miller, a former nurse at the clinic."

Grace entered the courtroom and described the night of the fire. She identified the signatures on the altered medical records and confirmed that the newborn had survived.

Then Daniel presented the financial transfers.

The courtroom grew restless.

Eleanor sat perfectly still.

When the judge asked whether she had arranged the falsification, Eleanor leaned toward her microphone.

"I did what I believed was necessary to protect my family."

Marco stood.

"By declaring my child dead?"

"By protecting her from your enemies."

"You were the enemy."

Eleanor looked at him with disappointment.

"Your father understood the cost of leadership. You never did."

Richard's name had not been mentioned publicly for twelve years. The courtroom erupted when he entered, leaning on his walking stick.

Reporters shouted questions.

Eleanor's face lost its practiced calm.

Richard took the stand and testified that he had helped establish the hidden accounts, but that Eleanor had used them to finance the clinic operation and manipulate the inheritance.

For the first time, the judge ordered a recess.

Marco thought they had finally gained the advantage.

Then Sophia stood.

"I have additional evidence," she announced.

She handed a sealed envelope to her attorney.

Inside were letters supposedly written by Isabella. They appeared to show that Isabella had planned to abandon Marco and had agreed to conceal Lily from him.

The attorney presented a recording.

Isabella's voice filled the courtroom.

"I don't want him to find her. If Marco ever discovers the truth, he'll destroy everything."

Marco turned toward his wife.

Isabella's face had gone white.

"I never said that."

Eleanor smiled faintly.

The judge ordered the recording preserved and suspended the custody proceedings pending an authenticity review.

Outside the courtroom, reporters surrounded Marco.

"Did your wife fake her death?"

"Did you know your family was involved in the clinic fire?"

"Is Lily really your daughter?"

Marco ignored them.

Isabella stood apart from the crowd, trembling.

He approached her.

"Tell me the recording is fake."

"It is."

"Can you prove it?"

She looked away.

Marco felt the old fear returning.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

"The words are mine."

He stepped back.

"What?"

"I said those things. But not the way they made it sound."

"Explain."

She shook her head.

"Not here."

Marco looked at her, searching for the woman he remembered.

Then he saw Lily standing beside Victor, holding another drawing.

The picture showed the courthouse.

A woman lay on the ground beneath a red circle.

Above the figure, Lily had written two words.

MOM FALLS.

Marco turned toward Isabella.

At that exact moment, a gunshot echoed from the street.

And Isabella collapsed in his arms.
