Chapter 15 - WHAT LILY REMEMBERED|

Lily spoke only three more words during the drive back to the mansion.
"Not there, Daddy."
Marco asked where she wanted to go.
She pointed toward the old garden behind the estate.
It was the garden where Isabella had once spent entire afternoons reading beneath a magnolia tree. After her supposed death, Marco had ordered the flowerbeds left untouched.
The garden had become a place he avoided.
Now Lily led him to a stone bench beside the fountain.
She opened her notebook and drew a small door.
Behind it stood a woman holding a box.
Above the drawing, she wrote:
MOM KNOWS.
Marco called Isabella outside.
She arrived with a blanket around her shoulders, her injured arm still in a sling.
Lily showed her the picture.
Isabella's face changed.
"Where did you see this?"
Lily pointed toward the mansion.
Then she pointed at the ground.
Marco crouched beside the fountain.
A loose stone sat beneath the bench. When he lifted it, he found a small brass key wrapped in cloth.
Isabella stared at the key.
"I thought Eleanor had destroyed it."
"What does it open?" Marco asked.
"The room beneath Saint Agnes."
Marco felt a familiar coldness settle in his chest.
"We searched that building."
"You searched the rooms they wanted you to find."
Isabella explained that Eleanor had built a second chamber beneath the original foundation. It contained medical records, photographs, and documents concerning the children she had moved through private clinics and guardianship arrangements.
Lily had been taken there once when she was five.
She remembered a room with a red light, a woman crying behind a wall, and a man who told her never to speak about what she saw.
"Who was the man?" Marco asked.
Lily drew a face.
Marco recognized him immediately.
Victor.
His chief of security.
He turned toward the mansion.
Victor was standing on the veranda.
For a long moment, their eyes met.
Then Victor walked inside.
Marco followed him to the study.
"How long have you known about the chamber?"
Victor did not pretend to misunderstand.
"Since before the fire."
Marco's hand tightened around the key.
"You worked for Eleanor."
"I worked for your father."
"That isn't an answer."
Victor looked exhausted.
"I was assigned to protect Isabella during the final months of her pregnancy. When Eleanor decided the child had to disappear, I was ordered to help move her."
"You helped take my daughter from her mother?"
"I helped keep her alive."
Marco slammed the key onto the desk.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No. I expect you to understand that if I had refused, Eleanor would have sent someone who didn't care whether Lily survived."
Victor admitted that he had secretly redirected the child to the retired nurse. He had also helped Isabella escape Saint Agnes.
But he had never told Marco because Eleanor possessed evidence that could send Victor's brother to prison.
"I made a terrible choice," he said. "I thought I could fix it later."
"Later became six years."
Victor lowered his head.
"I know."
Marco ordered him to surrender his weapons and remain under guard.
Then he turned toward Isabella.
"We're going back to Saint Agnes."
She shook her head.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because the room contains more than records."
Isabella looked at Lily.
"It contains the original birth certificate. The one that proves who delivered our daughter."
Marco frowned.
"You delivered her."
"No. I gave birth to Lily, but the hospital records were altered. Eleanor claimed there was another infant involved."
Marco stared at her.
"Another infant?"
Isabella nodded.
"Lily wasn't the only child born that night."
She paused.
"There was a second baby. And Eleanor told me that child died."
Lily began to draw again.
Two small figures stood side by side.
One wore blue.
The other wore red.

Underneath, she wrote a name.
