Chapter 4 - SOPHIA'S PERFECT LIE|

Sophia Moretti had never liked being summoned.

She preferred invitations, negotiations, and rooms where everyone already understood that she held the advantage.

But when Marco's car arrived outside her penthouse at seven that evening, she knew the rules had changed.

She found him standing in her living room, holding the silver pendant Lily had brought to the mansion.

"What are you doing here?" she asked.

"Looking for the truth."

Sophia laughed nervously.

"You've been spending too much time with that child."

"Who is Lily?"

"I told you. I don't know."

Marco placed the pendant on the table.

"Arthur Bell says you altered Isabella's medical records."

"Arthur is a coward."

"He says you paid him."

"I paid him for legitimate accounting work."

"Did you know my daughter survived the fire?"

Sophia's expression froze.

It lasted less than a second, but it was enough.

Marco walked closer.

"You knew."

Sophia raised her chin.

"You're grieving, Marco. You have been grieving for six years. Now some child appears at your door with a cheap pendant, and suddenly you want to rewrite history."

"Answer the question."

She stared at him.

Then she began to cry.

The performance was flawless. Her shoulders shook, her voice broke, and tears gathered beneath her lashes.

"I tried to protect you."

"From what?"

"From Isabella."

Marco's expression did not change.

Sophia wiped her face.

"Your wife was involved with people who wanted your business. She was going to leave you. She told your mother everything."

"What everything?"

"That she planned to take the baby and disappear."

Marco remembered their final argument six years earlier. Isabella had stood in the nursery doorway, saying she could no longer live in a house where every conversation was monitored and every friendship treated like a threat.

He had accused her of being dramatic.

He had told her she could leave if she wanted.

She had never answered.

Three days later, the clinic burned.

"You're saying my mother helped Isabella escape?" he asked.

Sophia nodded.

"Your mother wanted the baby hidden because there were enemies who could use her against you."

"Then why falsify the death records?"

"Because you wouldn't have accepted the truth."

Marco stared at her.

"That is the most insulting explanation I've ever heard."

Sophia stepped toward him.

"Marco, listen to me. I have stood beside you for years. I helped manage your public life. I protected your reputation. I could have married anyone, but I chose you."

"You chose the Duca name."

"That's not fair."

"Neither was burying my daughter."

Sophia's tears stopped.

For the first time, her face revealed what lay beneath the beautiful mask.

Resentment.

"You think Isabella was innocent?" she whispered. "You think she loved you enough to stay? She was going to destroy everything your family built."

"Did you see her after the fire?"

Sophia said nothing.

"Did you?"

She backed away.

Marco took out his phone and showed her a photograph of the old clinic.

Grace Miller stood beside him in the picture.

Sophia recognized her immediately.

"That woman should have kept her mouth shut."

Marco's eyes narrowed.

"Thank you."

Sophia realized her mistake.

He walked toward the door.

"You're making a terrible mistake," she said. "You don't know what Isabella did."

"Then tell me."

Sophia's jaw tightened.

"She was going to give the police your mother's financial records."

Marco stopped.

"What records?"

"The accounts that paid for the clinic. The accounts that funded the fire. The accounts that bought the judge who signed your daughter's death certificate."

He turned slowly.

"Who ordered the fire?"

Sophia's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Your mother."

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Sophia added the words she should have kept to herself.

"And Isabella helped her."

Marco left without another question.

Outside, Victor was waiting beside the car.

"Boss, we found something."

"What?"

"A sealed property record for Saint Agnes. It was purchased through a company owned by Eleanor Duca."

Marco looked at the photograph in his hand.

For the first time, he considered the possibility that the woman he had loved might have helped create the nightmare that destroyed their family.

And if Sophia was telling even half the truth, finding Isabella would not end the investigation.

It would begin the most dangerous part.
