Chapter 12 - THE VAULT BENEATH THE CITY|

The Duca family bank occupied a narrow limestone building on Wall Street. Its public offices were modern, bright, and meticulously respectable.
Beneath them lay the original vault.
Marco arrived after midnight with Victor, Daniel, and Isabella. Lily stayed in the armored vehicle with Elena, protected by two guards.
The vault entrance required three keys and a code known only to Marco's father, Marco, and the family's former legal trustee.
Daniel entered the code.
The door unlocked with a heavy mechanical click.
Inside were metal cabinets, sealed boxes, and shelves of ledgers covered in dust.
Marco found his father's personal archive in a locked drawer.
The first folder contained records from thirty years earlier. The second contained photographs of properties the family had purchased through shell companies.
The third held a photograph of a man lying beside a river.
Marco recognized him from old family pictures.
His name was Thomas Vale.
"He was your father's business partner," Daniel explained. "He disappeared after a dispute over the docks."
Marco turned a page.
A handwritten statement was clipped to the photograph.
Richard Duca had admitted ordering Thomas's death.
But beneath the confession was a second document, signed by Eleanor.
It showed that she had arranged the meeting, selected the location, and instructed the men who carried out the killing.
Marco felt sick.
"Why keep this?"
Daniel examined the document.
"Insurance. Your father and mother kept evidence against each other. Neither could betray the other without destroying themselves."
"Then why didn't they destroy it?"
"Because they never expected anyone to survive long enough to challenge them."
Isabella found a small cassette recorder in a box marked with the year of the clinic fire.
She pressed play.
Eleanor's voice emerged from the speaker.
"If the child survives, she becomes the only legitimate heir to the trust. The father must remain unaware until the transfer is complete."
A second voice answered.
Sophia.
"And Isabella?"
"She will sign the documents or she will disappear."
Marco stopped the recording.
He looked toward Isabella.
"You knew about this."
"I suspected. I never saw the actual evidence."
Daniel opened another folder.
Inside was a document transferring control of the family's remaining private assets to a company called Northstar Holdings.
The company had been incorporated under the name of a man who had supposedly died twelve years earlier.
Richard Duca.
But the signature on the final page was dated three months ago.
Marco stared at it.
"Who has control of Northstar?"
Daniel checked the registry.
"The beneficial owner is concealed behind a trust."
"Find it."
Daniel worked quickly, entering the company number into a secure terminal.
Then he stopped.
"The trust is registered to a woman named Catherine Vale."
Isabella's face changed.
"Thomas Vale had a daughter."
Marco looked at her.
"Was she involved with your family?"
"She was a child when her father died. I met her once at a charity event. She was raised by relatives in Boston."
Daniel found an old photograph attached to the file.
Catherine Vale stood beside a younger Eleanor Duca.
On the back, someone had written:
The heir returns when the debt is paid.
A sound came from the vault entrance.
Three slow knocks.
Victor raised his weapon.
Marco turned.
A voice called from the corridor.
"Marco? It's your father."
Richard stepped inside, holding a pistol.
He pointed it at Daniel.
"Put the files down."
Marco stared at him.
"Father?"
Richard's expression was filled with pain.
"I'm sorry, son."
Then he fired.
The bullet struck the cabinet beside Daniel's head.
Richard grabbed the ledger and ran.
Marco rushed after him, but the vault door slammed shut between them.
A second lock engaged.
From the other side, Richard spoke through the metal.
May you like
"You should never have opened the vault."
Then the lights went out.
