Chapter 17 - THE HEIR WHO CHOSE THE TRUTH|

Ava Cross arrived at the Duca mansion the following afternoon under heavy security.
She was twenty-six, intelligent, and visibly angry at being treated like a person in need of rescue.
"I don't need a bodyguard," she told Marco.
"Today, you do."
"You don't know me."
"No. But I know the woman who wants you."
Ava studied him.
"You're the mafia boss."
"I'm also Lily's father."
She looked toward the little girl standing beside Isabella.
Lily held out a drawing.
It showed two girls standing beneath the same magnolia tree.
Ava stared at it.
"She drew this?"
Isabella nodded.
"She has been drawing you since before we knew your name."
Ava looked unsettled.
"That doesn't make sense."
"Neither does your adoption record," Daniel said.
He placed the original hospital documents on the table.
Ava read them in silence.
Her birth mother was Rebecca Vale. Her biological father had not been recorded. The clinic had transferred custody to a private guardian under a sealed agreement.
A second document listed Eleanor Duca as the authorizing party.
Ava pushed the papers away.
"My parents loved me."
"No one is saying they didn't," Daniel replied. "They may have believed they were helping a child. But someone concealed your identity."
Ava looked at him.
"Why didn't you tell me you were adopted?"
"I was six. I barely understood what was happening."
"You could have looked for me."
"I didn't know you were missing."
Ava stood and walked to the window.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then she turned.
"What does Eleanor want from me?"
Catherine answered.
"Your legal claim to the Vale trust. If you are Thomas Vale's niece and Rebecca's daughter, you may have a stronger claim to the assets Eleanor took."
Ava laughed bitterly.
"So this is about money."
"That's what Eleanor wants you to believe."
Marco placed the copied ledger on the table.
"It is about the clinic, the missing children, the murders, and the people who paid to make all of it disappear."
Ava looked at the documents.
Then she did something nobody expected.
She opened her laptop.
"I've spent eight years investigating fraudulent trusts and hidden financial transfers," she said. "If Eleanor used the same methods across multiple accounts, she probably made mistakes."
Within an hour, Ava had identified a pattern of transfers connecting Northstar Holdings to three private clinics, two judges, and a charity that had supposedly closed ten years earlier.
The charity had received millions of dollars in donations.
Its listed director was Richard Duca.
Its registered address was a building that no longer existed.
Ava leaned closer to the screen.
"There's another account."
"Where?" Marco asked.
"Offshore. It was created using a trust number connected to Lily's inheritance."
"How much?"
Ava turned the laptop.
The balance was enormous.
But the most disturbing detail was the account's beneficiary designation.
It did not name Eleanor.
It named Lily.
And beneath Lily's name was a second beneficiary.
Ava Cross.
"Why would Eleanor put us both on the same trust?" Ava asked.
Isabella looked at the screen.
"Because she wanted to control both families."
Ava continued examining the documents.
"There's a clause that activates when the two beneficiaries appear together in person. If we both sign, the trust becomes independent of Eleanor's control."
Marco understood.
Eleanor had created a mechanism that could transfer the entire fortune to the two girls if they ever discovered their connection.
But the transfer required an original document.
The same document hidden in the chamber beneath Saint Agnes.
Ava closed her laptop.
"Then we get it."
Marco looked at her.
"You could walk away."
Ava's expression hardened.
"My mother lost her life trying to expose this family. My uncle was murdered. My entire childhood was built on a lie."
She stood.
"I'm not walking away."
Lily took Ava's hand.
Then, for the first time, she spoke to someone other than Marco or Isabella.
"You're my sister."
Ava's eyes filled with tears.
She knelt and embraced the child.
But across the city, Eleanor Duca was watching security footage of the reunion.
She smiled.
"Excellent," she whispered.

Then she picked up her phone.
"Tell Richard the girls are together. It's time to begin the final transfer."
