Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF A DAUGHTER|

Marco had survived ambushes, betrayals, and two attempts on his life.
None had frightened him like the possibility of losing Lily again.
Behind the hidden door, Isabella clutched his arm while footsteps moved through the building.
"How did Sophia find us?" he whispered.
"She has people everywhere," Isabella replied. "She always did."
"Tell me everything."
"There isn't time."
"Then make time."
Isabella looked at him with exhausted eyes.
"I was never supposed to survive the clinic. Your mother arranged the fire to destroy the medical records and eliminate the people who knew about her accounts. I discovered what she was doing. I tried to stop her."
"Why would she kill her own granddaughter?"
"She wasn't trying to kill Lily. She was trying to control her."
Isabella explained that Eleanor had planned to use the child as leverage over Marco. If he refused to surrender control of the family's legitimate businesses, Eleanor would reveal evidence that could send him to prison.
But the plan had changed when Isabella escaped with the baby.
"She wanted Lily hidden until she could force you to cooperate," Isabella said. "When I refused, she took the child from me."
Marco's hands curled into fists.
"Where?"
"I don't know. A nurse helped me escape. She told me the baby had been taken to a safe house. I searched for years."
"And Lily?"
"She found me three months ago. She was living with an elderly woman who had been paid to keep her hidden. The woman died, and Lily ran away."
Marco stared at her.
"Why didn't she speak?"
Isabella's expression softened.
"She could speak when she was little. After she saw a man attack the woman who raised her, she stopped talking. The doctors called it selective mutism. I called it fear."
A heavy impact shook the hidden door.
Victor's voice came through a radio.
"Boss, we have company. Six armed men. Sophia is upstairs."
Marco checked his weapon.
"Can you walk?"
Isabella nodded.
They moved through a narrow service tunnel that emerged behind the old laundry room. Victor met them there, blood running from a cut above his eyebrow.
"We need to move," he said.
"Where's Sophia?"
"She has the east exit covered."
Marco looked toward the rear corridor.
"Then we'll use the west."
They reached the courtyard just as headlights swept across the building.
A black SUV blocked the gate.
Sophia stepped out, wearing a cream coat and holding a pistol.
"You always did make things difficult," she said.
Marco placed himself in front of Isabella.
"Move."
Sophia smiled.
"I don't think you understand the situation. Eleanor has Lily. If you want your daughter back, you'll bring me the original account ledger from your father's vault."
"Why?"
"Because it proves your mother financed the clinic fire."
"Why would you want evidence against her?"
Sophia's smile disappeared.
"Because she promised me your empire. Instead, she made me spend six years pretending to be a grieving family friend while she controlled everything from the shadows."
"You helped her."
"I did what I had to do."
Marco's voice turned cold.
"Where is Lily?"
Sophia raised her pistol.
"Bring me the ledger by midnight tomorrow. Come alone. If you bring your men, Lily dies."
Isabella made a small sound behind him.
Sophia glanced at her.
"You're supposed to be dead."
"So are you, in every honest version of this story," Isabella replied.
For the first time, Sophia looked genuinely furious.
She fired into the ground beside Marco's feet.
"Midnight," she repeated.
Then she climbed into the SUV and disappeared through the gate.
Marco turned toward Isabella.
"Do you know where Eleanor is keeping Lily?"
Isabella nodded.
"At the old Duca summer house."
"Then that's where we're going."
She caught his hand.
"Marco, you cannot go there without understanding something."
"What?"
"Eleanor doesn't just want the ledger."
May you like
Isabella looked toward the dark road.
"She wants you to kill me."
