CHAPTER 27

THE BABY WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO INHERIT

Nathaniel's family had created a trust for June before she was born.

It contained shares in Whitfield Holdings.

The amount was enormous.

But the trust had one condition.

The beneficiary had to be Caroline's biological child.

If June were not Caroline's child, the trust would become vulnerable.

Someone could manipulate the inheritance.

Someone could create a false identity.

Someone could redirect millions.

Owen spent the night tracing the old documents.

By morning, he found the first connection.

A law firm.

A shell company.

And a man named Richard Vale.

Nathaniel recognized the name.

"Who is he?"

Owen answered:

"Your father's former financial advisor."

Nathaniel stared.

"My father trusted him."

"Your father trusted many people who later stole from him."

"Is he alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"New York."

Nathaniel stood.

"We're going."

Elena grabbed his arm.

"Not yet."

He looked at her.

"Lily is involved."

"Exactly."

"We need answers."

"We need to protect her first."

Nathaniel paused.

For the first time, he realized the danger had moved beyond documents.

Someone had sent a letter to his house.

Someone knew Lily's identity.

Someone wanted him to believe the child he had raised was connected to a hidden inheritance.

And someone had waited three years after his marriage to Elena before revealing the secret.

That meant the person had been watching.

Nathaniel called security.

Then he called the police.

May you like

But before either could arrive, the school called.

Lily was missing.
