THE LAST PERSON WHO KNEW THE TRUTH
Richard Vale had one final secret.
He had not acted alone.
The person who ordered the hospital records changed was not Nathaniel's father.
It was someone else.
Someone Caroline trusted.
Dr. Samuel Rainer.
Nathaniel confronted him.
The old doctor did not deny it.
"I changed the record."
Elena stood beside Nathaniel.
"Why?"
"Because June was dying."
Nathaniel's voice shook.
"You told me she was healthy."
"I lied."
"Why?"
"Because your father wanted her abandoned."
Nathaniel stared.
"Then you saved her."
"No."
Dr. Rainer lowered his head.
"I saved one child."
"What does that mean?"
"The newborn who was placed in the treatment ward was not June."
Nathaniel froze.
Dr. Rainer continued.
"June was healthy."
Elena whispered:
"Then who was sick?"
Dr. Rainer looked at her.
"Lily."
Elena's entire body went cold.
"No."
"Lily was born with a condition."
"But she is healthy."
"Because she received treatment."
Nathaniel stared at Elena.
"Your mother knew."
Elena felt dizzy.
"Why would my mother hide this from me?"
"Because she believed someone wanted Lily's identity."
