CHAPTER 21

THE HOUSE THAT FINALLY LEARNED TO BREATHE
Three years had passed since Nathaniel Whitfield and Elena Carter were married.
The mansion had changed.
Not in the way newspapers described.
The marble floors remained polished. The crystal chandeliers still reflected the morning light. The gates still opened only after security confirmed the identity of every visitor.
But the house no longer felt empty.
Lily's laughter traveled through the halls.
Mrs. Donnelly had given up pretending she disliked the noise.
Nathaniel had given up pretending he could work through it.
And Elena had learned that love, despite everything she had once feared, did not have to mean losing herself.
She was now a registered nurse and the director of the Caroline Whitfield Foundation's family support program.
Every morning, she left the mansion before seven.
Every evening, she returned to find Lily waiting at the front door.
That morning, however, Lily was not waiting.
Elena noticed immediately.
She entered through the main hall and found Nathaniel standing beside the staircase.
He was holding a white envelope.
His face was unusually pale.
"Where is Lily?"
"At school."
"Then why do you look like someone died?"
Nathaniel looked down at the envelope.
"Because I don't know."
Elena stopped.
"What does that mean?"
"I received this an hour ago."
He handed it to her.
There was no return address.
Only one sentence written on the front.
YOU HAVE BEEN RAISING THE WRONG CHILD.
Elena stared at the words.
For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Then she looked at Nathaniel.
"Is this some kind of threat?"
"I don't know."
"Does it have anything to do with the Hale family?"
"No."
"How can you be sure?"
"Because the handwriting is familiar."
Elena felt a coldness move through her chest.
"Whose?"
May you like
Nathaniel looked toward the east wing.
"Caroline's."
