CHAPTER 30

THE WOMAN WHO KNEW ELENA'S MOTHER

Victoria revealed that Elena's mother had once worked at Saint Matthew's Hospital.

She had been a nurse.

A good one.

But six years earlier, she had disappeared from the hospital without explanation.

Elena had always believed her mother left because of illness.

Victoria claimed otherwise.

"Your mother was involved in the baby records."

Elena shook her head.

"My mother would never do this."

"She did not steal Lily."

"Then what did she do?"

Victoria looked toward the dark nursery.

"She saved her."

Nathaniel stared.

Victoria continued.

"Caroline's baby was sick."

Elena's heart stopped.

"June?"

"She was born with a condition that required immediate treatment."

"That is not in the records."

"Because the records were changed."

Victoria looked at Nathaniel.

"Your father wanted the world to believe June was perfectly healthy."

"Why?"

"Because the Whitfield family had already announced her birth. Investors were watching. Your father's company was unstable."

Nathaniel's expression darkened.

"That makes no sense."

"It does if you understand your father."

Victoria explained that the hospital had discovered the newborn had a serious condition.

A condition that could have affected the inheritance trust.

Caroline had refused to hide it.

She had wanted her daughter treated.

But someone had altered the records.

The baby who had been listed as June was not June.

The child who had received treatment had been given another identity.

Elena stared at her.

"You're saying my mother switched the babies?"

Victoria nodded.

"To save Caroline's daughter."

Nathaniel looked at Lily.

"But Lily is Elena's biological daughter."

"Yes."

"Then where is June?"

Victoria's face changed.

May you like

She whispered:

"She is alive."
