CHAPTER 24

THE WOMAN IN THE GREEN COAT

Victoria Hale had spent the last three years in federal prison.

She had not been convicted of Caroline's death.

But the financial crimes had been enough to destroy her family.

Charles Hale died before trial.

Her mother moved overseas.

The Hale name became synonymous with corruption.

Victoria, however, never admitted to knowing anything about the hospital records.

Until Elena remembered the green coat.

Nathaniel immediately contacted Owen Clarke.

Within hours, the old hospital access logs were retrieved.

The records showed that Victoria had entered Saint Matthew's Hospital six years earlier.

The date was the same day June had been born.

Elena stared at the document.

"Why would she be there?"

"Her mother was admitted for a procedure," Owen said.

"That doesn't explain the nursery."

"According to the access log, Victoria entered the maternity wing at 2:17 a.m."

Nathaniel's voice became cold.

"Caroline gave birth at 1:43."

Elena remembered the corridor.

The green coat.

A woman standing behind the glass.

And something else.

A second baby.

She turned to Nathaniel.

"There was another infant."

He stared at her.

"Another infant?"

"I don't know. I saw two bassinets."

Owen slowly lifted his head.

"How many babies were born in that room that night?"

Dr. Rainer answered.

"Two."

Nathaniel frowned.

"Who was the other child?"

No one spoke.

Owen placed another file on the table.

"The hospital record says the second child was a girl named Lily Carter."

Elena froze.

The room seemed to tilt.

Nathaniel looked at her.

"Lily?"

Elena whispered, "That was my daughter."

Owen shook his head.

"Not according to the original records."

May you like

Elena's heart began pounding.

"Then whose child was Lily?"
