CHAPTER 37

THE REAL ENEMY

The letter had not been written by Caroline.

The handwriting had been copied.

The person who sent it had access to Caroline's private letters.

That meant someone close to the family.

Owen traced the envelope.

The paper came from a private archive.

An archive owned by—

Maya Bennett.

Nathaniel stared at the result.

"No."

Maya had no reason.

She had just found her family.

She had no access to the Whitfield archives.

Unless someone had given her the documents.

Nathaniel called her.

No answer.

He called again.

Still nothing.

Then Elena received a message.

A photograph.

Maya standing beside Richard Vale.

The message beneath it read:

SHE KNOWS MORE THAN SHE HAS TOLD YOU.

Nathaniel immediately drove to Maya's apartment.

The door was open.

The apartment was empty.

On the table lay a photograph of Caroline.

Behind it was a note.

I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO COME HOME.

Nathaniel read it.

Then another message arrived.

COME TO THE PLACE WHERE CAROLINE FIRST SAW HER DAUGHTER.

Elena looked at him.

"The hospital."

Nathaniel shook his head.

"No."

May you like

He knew.

"The cemetery."
