Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

|

With the missing eighteen million firmly back in Lorenzo's control, the second phase of the operation began. It was no longer about retrieving stolen money; it was about absolute, systematic destruction.

For the next three days, Emma barely left the library. She was a woman obsessed, armed with the unlimited resources of a mafia empire.

She dug deep into the Whitmore corporate infrastructure. What she found was a rotting house of cards built entirely on fraudulent valuations, inflated assets, and illegal tax evasion schemes Charles had implemented long before Emma had taken over the books.

"Look at this," Emma said late Thursday night, rubbing her tired eyes.

Lorenzo, who had been sitting on the leather sofa reviewing his own syndicate reports, immediately stood up and walked over. He rested his hand casually on her shoulder, a physical contact that had become a comforting, frequent occurrence between them.

"What did you find?" Lorenzo asked, leaning down to look at the monitor.

"My father didn't just steal your money," Emma pointed at a series of offshore accounts. "He’s been running a massive Ponzi scheme through his real estate division for five years. He’s using new investor capital to pay dividends to the old investors. The entire company is insolvent. They are entirely broke, Lorenzo."

Lorenzo’s eyes darkened with a predatory gleam. "If we expose the Ponzi scheme to the SEC, the federal government will freeze everything they own by morning."

"Exactly," Emma nodded, her fingers flying over the keyboard. "But before the feds freeze it, I need to execute the default clause in the loan contract Charles signed with your front company."

"The collateral clause," Lorenzo realized, a dark, wicked smile spreading across his face.

"If Charles defaults on the repayment—which he technically did the moment he failed to provide the initial transfer—your holding company has the legal right to seize the primary collateral."

"His flagship properties," Lorenzo murmured.

"And the Manhattan penthouse," Emma added softly.

Lorenzo looked down at her. The brilliant, ruthless mind hiding behind her soft, beautiful features completely captivated him. She was systematically dismantling her own toxic bloodline without a shred of hesitation.

"Do it," Lorenzo commanded softly. "Execute the clause."

Emma hit the final keystroke. The digital transfer sequence initiated, legally stripping Charles Whitmore of the very roof over his head.

"It's done," Emma whispered, staring at the screen. The adrenaline faded, leaving a sudden, hollow exhaustion in her chest.

Lorenzo noticed her slump. He gently grabbed her desk chair and spun it around so she was facing him. He knelt down in front of her, ignoring his expensive suit, and took both of her hands.

"The work is finished for tonight," Lorenzo said firmly, his eyes filled with dark, intense affection. "Come with me. We have something to celebrate."
