Chapter 11 - The Gala Invitation

The kiss left Emma completely breathless, her heart hammering a frantic, wild rhythm against her ribs. When Lorenzo finally pulled back, his dark eyes were dilated, burning with a possessive fire that made her shiver.
"I have wanted to do that since the moment you stepped into my study," Lorenzo murmured, his thumb gently tracing her swollen lower lip.
Emma leaned into his touch, feeling a profound, terrifying sense of belonging in a house owned by a mafia boss. "What happens now, Lorenzo?"
"Now," Lorenzo said, standing up to his full, imposing height and offering her his hand. "We prepare for war."
The next morning, the reality of Emma's digital assault on the Whitmore empire hit the news cycle. The SEC had raided Charles Whitmore's corporate offices at dawn. Andrew's gambling debts in Macau had leaked to the press, and the family's assets were officially frozen by the federal government.
Emma sat in the library, watching the news coverage on her monitor, feeling a strange mix of vindication and surreal detachment.
Lorenzo walked into the room, holding a thick, cream-colored envelope with a wax seal.
"The annual Chicago Syndicate Charity Gala is tomorrow night," Lorenzo announced, tossing the envelope onto her desk. "It is a highly publicized event. The mayor will be there. The governor will be there."
"And the Whitmores?" Emma asked, looking at the invitation.
"Charles has been desperately calling every contact he has, trying to secure a last-minute loan to post bail for Andrew and keep his creditors at bay," Lorenzo explained, a cold smirk on his face. "He managed to pull some favors to keep his VIP tickets to the gala. He intends to use the event to beg the city's elite for a financial lifeline. He wants to project an image that the rumors of his bankruptcy are false."
Emma’s eyes narrowed. "He’s going to use Vanessa to charm the investors."
"He will certainly try," Lorenzo agreed. He walked around the desk, placing his hands flat on her armrests, leaning in close. "Which is why we are going to attend. I want to look Charles in the eye when his empire completely crumbles. And I want you on my arm when it happens."

Emma’s breath caught. "Lorenzo, I can't go to a high-society gala. I don't have the right clothes. I don't know how to play those games."
"You don't need to play their games, Emma," Lorenzo whispered fiercely, his face inches from hers. "You are going to rewrite the rules. I will handle the dress. You just handle the entrance."
