Chapter 7 - The Digital War

The library of the Moretti estate was a masterpiece of old-world mahogany and ancient books, but the center of the room had been transformed into a modern technological command center.
Emma sat behind a massive desk, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. Three monitors glowed brightly in the dim room, displaying cascading lines of financial data, routing numbers, and encrypted bank ledgers.
Lorenzo stood behind her chair. He was close—so close she could feel the heat radiating from his body and smell the intoxicating scent of cedar and bergamot. He watched the screens intently, but Emma caught him looking down at her neck more than once.
"Andrew used a rudimentary shell company registered in Belize," Emma explained, pointing a pen at the center monitor. "He thought he was being clever by routing the eighteen million through a series of micro-transactions masquerading as hotel renovation invoices."
"Can you trace the endpoint?" Lorenzo's deep voice vibrated near her ear.
"I already did," Emma said, a fierce, triumphant smile touching her lips. "The money is sitting in a holding account in Macau, waiting to be cleared to his creditors at the casino. The clearing process takes seventy-two hours. He initiated it yesterday."
"We have two days to intercept it," Lorenzo noted, resting his hand on the back of her chair.
"I don't need two days. I need two minutes," Emma said. Her eyes narrowed as she typed a rapid sequence of code into the terminal. "He used the primary Whitmore corporate credentials to authorize the transfer. Since my father never bothered to revoke my admin access—because he assumes I'm too timid to ever use it—I can override the destination."
Emma hit the enter key with a sharp, satisfying clack.
"Destination rerouted," Emma announced, leaning back in her chair. "The eighteen million is currently bouncing back through a secure proxy server and directly into your primary syndicate holding account. The money is yours again, Lorenzo."
Lorenzo stared at the confirmation screen. He had teams of highly paid hackers who would have taken weeks to bypass the Belizean security protocols. The woman sitting in front of him had done it before her coffee got cold.
"You are absolutely terrifying," Lorenzo murmured, his voice thick with raw admiration.
He didn't pull away. He leaned down, placing both hands on the armrests of her chair, boxing her in. His face was inches from hers.
"What happens when Andrew checks his casino balance tomorrow?" Lorenzo asked softly.
"He's going to realize his debt hasn't been paid," Emma whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs as she looked into his dark, mesmerizing eyes. "And the casino will realize he tried to defraud them."
"They will break his legs," Lorenzo stated clinically.

"I know," Emma replied without a shred of pity.
Lorenzo smiled, a dark, beautiful expression. He leaned in and pressed a slow, deliberate kiss to her forehead. "You are exactly where you belong, Emma."
