Chapter 2 - The Drive into Darkness

|

The ride down the elevator felt like a descent into the underworld. Emma didn't have a suitcase. There was no overnight bag waiting by her bedroom door because her family had not considered how long collateral might be kept—or if it would be returned at all.

When she stepped out into the freezing Manhattan night, the rain immediately soaked the shoulders of her old coat. Three sleek, armored black SUVs idled at the curb, their engines humming with a deep, menacing vibration.

A tall, broad-shouldered man with a jagged scar crossing his jawline stepped out of the lead vehicle. He held a black umbrella over her head before the first drop could hit her face.

"Miss Whitmore," the man said. His voice was a low, gravelly rumble. "I am Marco. Please, get in."

Emma climbed into the back of the SUV. The interior smelled of rich leather and faint cigar smoke. The tinted windows completely separated her from the city outside, making her feel as though she were sealed inside a moving vault.

As the convoy merged onto the highway, heading toward the sprawling estates of Long Island, Emma pressed the black folder against her ribs. For fourteen years, she had repaired what her family broke. She had found the accounting error that nearly ruined Andrew’s hotel acquisition. She had restructured the crushing debts beneath Vanessa’s failing luxury brand. She had worked through dawn while Charles entertained investors who believed the financial brilliance belonged entirely to him.

At galas, her father introduced her as someone who "helped with the business." In family photographs, Vanessa always asked her to move out of the frame.

Tonight, they had finally found a use for her that required no intelligence at all. A sacrificial lamb to appease a monster.

"You are shaking, Miss Whitmore," Marco observed from the front seat, his dark eyes watching her in the rearview mirror. He reached over and turned up the heat in the back cabin.

"It's just the cold," Emma lied smoothly.

"Mr. Moretti does not tolerate the cold," Marco said cryptically. "You will be warm soon."

An hour later, the SUVs passed through massive, wrought-iron gates adorned with a sharp, stylized 'M'. The driveway wound through acres of manicured, shadowed grounds before stopping in front of a sprawling limestone mansion that looked more like a fortress than a home.

Marco opened her door. The rain gleamed on the limestone steps.

"This way," Marco instructed, escorting her through the heavy mahogany doors and into the warm, silent corridors of the estate. The air here was heavy with power.

"Mr. Moretti is waiting," Marco said, stopping in front of a pair of towering double doors.

"For Vanessa?" Emma asked, assuming the mafia boss would be furious at the bait-and-switch.

Marco glanced down at her, a strange, knowing respect in his eyes.

"For you."
