Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

|

The silence around the Whitmore family was suffocating as Lorenzo and Emma approached.

Charles looked like a man standing on the gallows. His perfectly tailored suit suddenly looked too big for his shrinking, defeated frame. Vanessa’s face was twisted in a mixture of profound shock and ugly, venomous jealousy.

"Good evening, Charles," Lorenzo greeted smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the quiet string quartet. "I see you managed to scrape together enough cash to keep your tickets tonight."

Charles swallowed hard, his eyes darting nervously to the heavily armed security men flanking Lorenzo. "Moretti. What is the meaning of this? Why is my daughter dressed like your... your escort?"

Before Lorenzo could unleash the violence simmering in his dark eyes, Emma stepped forward.

"I am not an escort, Charles," Emma stated, her voice ringing clear and cold, entirely devoid of the timid hesitation she had carried for fourteen years. "I am his Chief Financial Officer. And I am the reason you are currently homeless."

Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "You? Don't be ridiculous, Emma! You're a glorified accountant! You couldn't mastermind a bake sale, let alone a corporate takeover!"

Vanessa took an aggressive step forward, her hand reaching out as if to slap Emma across the face.

Emma didn't flinch. With lightning speed, she caught Vanessa’s wrist mid-air, her grip surprisingly strong.

"I masterminded your entire luxury brand, Vanessa," Emma said quietly, tightening her grip until her sister winced in pain. "I hid your debts. I restructured your failing loans. I made you look brilliant. And three days ago, I undid all of it in less than ten minutes. You have nothing. Your brand is insolvent. Your credit is gone."

Emma forcefully pushed Vanessa’s hand away. Vanessa stumbled backward, landing awkwardly against her mother, completely humiliated in front of the watching elite.

"You ungrateful little bitch," Charles hissed, stepping forward, his arrogance overriding his survival instincts. "I gave you everything! I put a roof over your head!"

"You put me in a cage," Emma corrected coldly. "And then you tried to sell me to a monster to save your own skin."

She looked up at Lorenzo, a fierce, unapologetic smile touching her lips. "Fortunately for me, the monster recognized a queen when he saw one."
