Chapter 20 - An Open Door

|

Late that night, the estate was silent, the storm howling against the reinforced glass windows of Lorenzo's private study.

Emma was curled up on the leather sofa, reading a book, while Lorenzo sat at his desk, reviewing the final acquisitions for the quarter. The fire cracked warmly in the hearth. It was a picture of perfect, hard-won domestic bliss.

Suddenly, the heavy, encrypted satellite phone locked inside Lorenzo's bottom desk drawer began to buzz.

The sound was sharp and jarring. Only Lorenzo’s top international contacts had that number. It was never used for social calls.

Lorenzo frowned, his posture instantly stiffening. The relaxed husband vanished, seamlessly replaced by the cold, calculating mafia boss. He unlocked the drawer and pulled out the heavy black device.

He answered the call without a word.

"Moretti," a voice crackled through the speaker. It was heavily distorted, masking the caller's identity, but the tone was incredibly arrogant and dripping with malice.

"Who is this?" Lorenzo demanded, his voice a low, lethal threat.

Emma sat up on the sofa, her heart rate spiking. She placed her book down and walked over to stand behind Lorenzo's chair, resting her hands protectively on his broad shoulders.

"You played a very impressive game in Chicago, Lorenzo," the distorted voice chuckled. "Dismantling the Whitmore family, seizing their assets, taking the brilliant daughter as your Queen. It was a beautiful, violent piece of theater."

Lorenzo’s blood ran cold. The details of the Whitmore financial takeover had been strictly contained. No one outside his inner circle knew Emma's exact role in the operation.

"What do you want?" Lorenzo asked, his hand instinctively reaching for the weapon holstered under his desk.

"Charles Whitmore was a fool," the voice continued smoothly, ignoring the question. "He owed you eighteen million. But he also owed my organization fifty million. And since you liquidated his assets and left him penniless, you essentially stole my money, Lorenzo."

A sickening realization began to form in the pit of Emma's stomach. Her father hadn't just been stealing from Lorenzo. He had been stealing from someone much worse.

"You didn't win the war, Lorenzo," the voice whispered, the sheer menace evident even through the encryption. "You just cleared the board so I could sit down to play. I am coming for my money. And I am coming for the clever little accountant who stole it from me."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Lorenzo lowered the phone, staring out into the pitch-black Chicago night. The snow continued to fall, burying the secrets of the past, but the truth was glaringly obvious.

The real monster hadn't even shown its face yet.

Emma didn't tremble. She didn't panic. She tightened her grip on Lorenzo's shoulders and leaned down, her eyes fierce and ready.

"Let them come," Emma whispered into the dark room.

Lorenzo looked up at his Queen, a dark, terrifying promise of violence lighting up his features. The first game was over. But a new war had just begun.
