Chapter 4 - The Unredacted Truth

|

Emma stared at the pages in his hand, her mind racing to comprehend the sheer magnitude of the situation.

"How did you get that report?" Emma asked, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper. "I personally handed the only physical copy to my father. The digital file is heavily encrypted on a secure, offline server."

Lorenzo smirked, a dangerous, thrilling expression that transformed his handsome face. He tossed the report back onto the walnut desk.

"Your father’s cybersecurity is as fragile as his ego," Lorenzo replied smoothly. "When eighteen million dollars of my syndicate's money suddenly vanished into thin air, I didn't politely ask for a bank statement. I had my people mirror his entire network. I watched him delete your findings in real time."

Emma swallowed hard. "Then you know I didn't take the money."

"I know," Lorenzo stepped closer, invading her personal space, though he made no move to touch her. The scent of cedar and expensive bourbon wrapped around her. "I know that you discovered your brother, Andrew, has been funneling capital into offshore shell companies to cover his gambling debts in Macau. I know your father decided to use my money to cover the margin calls, assuming he could replace it before the quarterly audit."

Emma felt the color drain from her face. "If you know everything, why am I here? Why not just send your men to the penthouse and deal with them?"

Lorenzo tilted his head, studying her with a dark, consuming fascination.

"Because a bullet is too quick for men who steal from me," Lorenzo said softly. "And because it wouldn't solve my primary problem. I need the money retrieved legally, seamlessly, without triggering a federal investigation into my own legitimate holdings. I need an insider. A financial ghost."

He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently taking the black folder from her rigid grip. He tossed it carelessly onto the floor.

"They sent you here thinking I would lock you in a basement and use you as a bargaining chip," Lorenzo murmured, his eyes locking onto hers. "They sent you to the slaughterhouse because they think you are nothing."

Emma looked down, the familiar, stinging pain of her family's betrayal burning in her chest. "They're right. To them, I am."

"Look at me," Lorenzo commanded gently.

She raised her eyes.

"To them, you are a nobody," Lorenzo whispered fiercely, stepping so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "To me, you are the key to the entire kingdom. And by the time we are finished, the Whitmore name will belong entirely to you."
