Chapter 15 - The Father's Panic

Charles’s face flushed a deep, ugly red. The realization that his quiet, invisible daughter had orchestrated his absolute destruction finally crashed through his thick skull.
"I will have you arrested for corporate espionage!" Charles roared, completely losing his composure, drawing the attention of every single guest in the immediate vicinity. "I will go to the FBI! I will tell them everything about your little mafia operation, Moretti!"
Lorenzo didn't move a muscle, but the air around him grew instantly freezing. He looked at Charles with the detached, clinical curiosity of a man examining a crushed insect.
"You will go to the FBI?" Lorenzo asked, a dark, terrifying amusement lacing his tone. "And tell them what, Charles? That you embezzled eighteen million dollars from a holding company to pay off your son's illegal gambling debts in Macau?"
Charles froze, the bluster instantly evaporating.
"Or perhaps," Lorenzo continued, stepping closer, his imposing height forcing the older man to look up, "you will tell them about the massive Ponzi scheme you’ve been running out of your real estate division for the last five years? The one Emma so meticulously documented and forwarded to the SEC yesterday morning?"
Vanessa gasped, covering her mouth in horror. Their mother began to quietly weep.
"You have absolutely no leverage, Charles," Lorenzo whispered, his voice a lethal, vibrating threat. "The penthouse is mine. The assets are frozen. Andrew is currently sitting in a holding cell facing federal wire fraud charges because he couldn't pay his creditors."
Charles stumbled backward, clutching his chest as if he were having a heart attack. The empire he had built on lies and Emma’s stolen brilliance was entirely gone.
"Emma, please," Charles begged, abandoning his anger for pathetic desperation. He looked at his daughter, tears finally welling in his eyes. "You have to help us. We're your family. We are blood. Please, tell him to call off the feds."
Emma looked at the man who had ignored her, belittled her, and ultimately tried to sacrifice her. She felt absolutely nothing. No pity, no sorrow. Just a profound, cleansing emptiness.
"You lost the right to call me family the moment you handed me that folder, Charles," Emma said softly. "Enjoy the gala. It will be the last party you ever attend."
She turned her back on her ruined family and slipped her arm through Lorenzo’s.

"Take me to the dance floor," Emma murmured.
Lorenzo smiled, a fierce, proud expression, and led his queen away from the ashes of her past.
