Chapter 11 - THE CONFESSIONEveryone turned toward Rodrigo's father.

He took one step backward.

Adrian stared at him.

"You knew."

The old man shook his head.

"I didn't kill him."

"Then why are you afraid?"

"I was there."

Adrian's voice became cold.

"Where?"

"At the house."

"The night my father died?"

The old man closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Valeria looked at Rodrigo.

His father had never told him.

Rodrigo whispered:

"What happened?"

The older man looked at his son.

"I was young."

"You were thirty-five."

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

The old man looked at Adrian.

"Your uncle."

Adrian's face hardened.

"My uncle killed my father?"

"He ordered it."

Silence.

The old man continued.

"Your father discovered that he was stealing from the company."

Adrian stared.

"He tried to expose him."

"Your uncle found out."

"And my mother?"

"She saw everything."

"Then why didn't she go to the police?"

The old man looked down.

"Because your uncle had Elena."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

"Your sister was still a child."

"She was alive."

"Yes."

"Where?"

The old man swallowed.

"Your uncle took her."

Adrian's hands began to shake.

"He threatened to kill her."

Valeria understood.

His mother had chosen silence to save her daughter.

But where had Elena gone?

The answer came from a voice behind them.

"You took long enough."

Everyone turned.

A woman stood at the entrance.

Older.

Elegant.

Her hair silver.

Her eyes unmistakable.

Adrian stopped breathing.

The woman whispered:

"Hello, Adrian."

He stared at her.

"Mom?"

She smiled through tears.

And then she said:

"I'm sorry."
