Chapter 10 - THE SECRET BELOWThe underground chamber smelled of dust and damp stone.
Rodrigo ran ahead.
"Tommy!"
His nephew answered.
"Uncle!"
They found him tied to a chair.
But he was unharmed.
Victor was gone.
Adrian immediately freed the boy.
"Did he hurt you?"
Tommy shook his head.
"He asked me questions."
"What questions?"
Tommy pointed toward the wall.
"He wanted me to tell him where the secret room was."
Adrian looked around.
"Did you?"
Tommy shook his head.
"I don't know."
Valeria noticed a strange symbol carved into the stone.
A silver star.
The same symbol appeared on the folder Adrian had given her.
She touched it.
The wall moved.
A hidden door opened.
Inside was a small room.
And on the table sat dozens of files.
Photographs.
Medical records.
Birth certificates.
And one photograph that made Adrian stop breathing.
It showed his mother.
Alive.
Older.
Standing beside a young woman.
The young woman wore the silver pendant.
The same one Victor had worn.
Adrian took the photograph.
His hands shook.
On the back was a name.
Elena Alcázar.
His sister.
Valeria stared.
"Victor is Elena."
Adrian shook his head.
"Impossible."
But the evidence was there.
The birth records.
The photographs.
The DNA report.
Elena had survived.
She had been taken away from the family.
And for twenty years, someone had hidden her identity.
Then Valeria found one final document.
A letter.
Written by Adrian's mother.
She read the first line.
If you are reading this, then my son has finally discovered what his uncle did.
Adrian took the letter.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his face changed.
"What does it say?"
He looked at Valeria.
"My mother didn't die."
"Where is she?"
Adrian's voice trembled.
"She has been hiding."
"From whom?"
He turned the page.
The answer was written in the final sentence.
I have been hiding from the man who killed your father.
Adrian looked toward Rodrigo's father.
The older man had gone completely white.
May you like
And Valeria realized…
The man who had killed Adrian's father was standing in the room with them.
