Chapter 20 - An Open Horizon|

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in Chicago, painting the Lake Forest estate in lush shades of green, pink, and white. The cold mist that had plagued the city during those dark autumn months had washed away.

Dominic stood near the edge of the estate’s private lake, watching the clear water ripple under the morning sun.

He was a changed man. The Valente family operated with quiet efficiency, but the brutal, arrogant edge Dominic once carried was gone. He spent his evenings at home. He personally managed the estate’s security, ensuring Clara was safe without feeling trapped.

He had earned back her conversation. He had earned her quiet smiles across the dinner table. But he knew that trust, once shattered, took years to fully rebuild.

He heard soft footsteps behind him on the wooden pier.

Clara walked up beside him, wearing a light trench coat, her dark hair tied back in a simple silk ribbon. She looked healthy, radiant, and whole.

"You're up early," Clara said gently, placing a hot mug of coffee in his hand.

Dominic smiled, taking a sip before looking at her. "Just watching the sunrise. It's beautiful today."

"It is," she agreed, looking out over the water.

Dominic reached out, hesitating for a fraction of a second, before gently sliding his fingers into hers.

Clara didn't pull away. She squeezed his hand—gently, but deliberately—holding his fingers tightly in the cool morning air.

A soft chime sounded from Dominic’s phone in his pocket. He pulled it out, looking at an encrypted message forwarded from Mateo.

The message contained a simple photograph: an unmarked black envelope delivered to the Valente headquarters, stamped with a wax seal bearing the crest of a high-level syndicate faction in New York.

Attached was a short note:

Dominic Valente. The Commission has noted your destruction of the Moretti family and your refusal to honor traditional territory agreements. A meeting has been called in Manhattan. Attend alone, or face the full weight of the Eastern families.

Dominic stared at the glowing screen, his jaw tightening slightly.

Clara looked down at the phone, reading the text over his shoulder. She didn't panic. She didn't flinch.

Instead, she turned to face him, her dark eyes filled with an unshakable, sharp resolve that mirrored his own.

"Are you going to New York?" Clara asked softly.

Dominic looked from the screen back to his wife, holding her hand tightly.

"Only if you come with me," Dominic said quietly.

Clara offered a faint, powerful smile—the smile of a woman who was no longer just a mafia wife, but an equal partner standing beside a king.

"Then tell Mateo to prepare the plane," Clara said, turning toward the estate. "We have an empire to protect."
