Chapter 14 - The Envelope|

The room went completely still.

Dominic stared at her, unable to process the words. "Divorce?"

"Yes," Clara said calmly. "I endured your coldness for five years because I thought that was simply how syndicate marriages worked. I swallowed my pride when you brought other women to dinner parties. But when you bought that girl a penthouse on Michigan Avenue using our family name, you humiliated me in front of every family in the Midwest."

She reached beneath her pillow, pulling out a crumpled, blood-stained yellow envelope that had been recovered from her purse.

She held it out to him.

"I signed them two days ago," Clara said, her voice steady despite the faint tremor in her hand. "I don't want your money, Dominic. I don't want your estates, your cars, or your empire. I just want my freedom."

Dominic looked down at the blood-stained envelope. His chest felt as though it were being crushed by an invisible weight.

"I won't sign it," Dominic rasped out, his hands shaking as he refused to touch the paper. "I will never sign it, Clara."

"Then you will keep a ghost in your house," Clara replied softly, turning her eyes back to the window. "Because the woman who loved you died in that car crash."

Dominic stepped back, his chest heaving, feeling more broken than he ever had in his entire life.
