Chapter 12 - The Awakening|

When Dominic walked back into the ICU room at three in the morning, the heavy silence was broken by the frantic sound of medical monitors.

"Mr. Valente!" a nurse called out as Dominic stepped through the door. "Her vitals are changing! Her brain pressure is dropping!"

Dominic rushed to the side of the bed.

Clara’s eyelids were fluttering wildly beneath the harsh fluorescent light. Her small, bloodless lips parted slightly, letting out a faint, raspy breath.

"Clara," Dominic gasped, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear. "Clara, can you hear me? It's Dominic. I'm right here."

Slowly, painfully, her dark lashes lifted.

Her deep brown eyes, clouded with medication and pain, searched the room before finally landing on Dominic's face.

"Dom..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the mechanical hiss of the oxygen line.

"I'm here, baby. I'm right here," Dominic choked out, tears overflowing his eyes as he gripped her trembling hand in both of his. "You're safe. The doctors saved you. I'm never leaving your side again."

Clara stared at him for a long, agonizing moment.

There was no joy in her eyes. No relief. No warmth.

Only a profound, cold distance that made Dominic’s blood run cold.

"Why..." Clara rasped out, her throat dry and raw. "...why didn't you let me die?"

The words hit Dominic like a physical blow. He stumbled back an inch, his face turning pale.

"Clara... what are you saying?" he stammered.

Clara slowly pulled her hand away from his grip, withdrawing her fingers beneath the white bedsheet.

"I don't want you here, Dominic," she whispered, turning her head away to stare out the dark window. "Go back to her."
