Chapter 1 - The Touch of Illusion|

Dominic Valente sat in the dimly lit VIP waiting suite of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, his tailored suit completely unwrinkled despite the hour. Outside, Chicago’s skyline was swallowed by a heavy autumn mist, but inside, everything smelled of expensive lavender oil and antiseptic wax.

He held Serena’s hand in his. Her fingers were manicured, soft, and dusted with delicate rings.

"Dom, my head is still pounding," Serena whimpered, pouting as she leaned back against the plush pillows. She was twenty-four, a rising model whose unpredictable tantrums had drawn Dominic in over the past year. "Are you sure the doctor gave me the best room? The fluorescent lights in the hallway are terrible."

"You're in the highest suite in the hospital, Serena," Dominic said gently, brushing a blonde curl from her forehead. "I made sure the chief of staff personally handled your IV. You just had a panic attack and minor dehydration from the party."

"I thought I was dying," she murmured, clutching his fingers tightly. "Are you going to stay with me all night? You're not going back to Lake Forest, are you?"

Dominic looked at her small, expressive face. For months, Serena had given him something his controlled life lacked: drama, obsession, and the constant feeling of being needed. At thirty-six, as the head of the Valente crime syndicate, control was Dominic's currency. He controlled politicians, shipping docks, and millions in illegal trade across the Midwest. Sitting here, playing the comforting protector to a beautiful young woman, made him feel invincible.

"I'm right here, baby," Dominic murmured, his deep voice smooth and reassuring. "I'm not going anywhere."

At his fortified estate in Lake Forest, his wife of five years was likely asleep. Clara Lombardi Valente never complained, never threw tantrums, and never demanded to know where he spent his nights. Their marriage had been forged as an alliance between two powerful syndicate families, and Clara had played her role with flawless, cold perfection.

She was quiet. She was invisible.

Dominic had mistaken her quiet dignity for a lack of passion. He had assumed she didn't care where he was.

Serena squeezed his fingers again, smiling softly. "Good. Because I can't stand being alone."

Before Dominic could reply, the tranquil silence of the VIP floor shattered into absolute chaos.
