Chapter 18 - The Standoff at the Gates|

"No," a soft, clear voice rang out from the grand doorway.

Dominic and Antonio turned simultaneously.

Clara stood at the top of the stone steps, leaning slightly on a wooden walking stick, wrapped in a white wool coat. Her face was pale, but her dark eyes were fiercely resolute.

"Clara," Antonio’s voice softened instantly as he walked up the steps to embrace his daughter. "My sweet girl. Look what this beast has done to you. Come home to Detroit. We will tear this alliance apart and destroy his family."

Clara hugged her father gently, then stepped back, looking between the two powerful syndicate bosses.

"I am not going back to Detroit, Papa," Clara said firmly.

Antonio frowned, startled. "What? Why? He humiliated you! He let rivals put you in an ICU!"

"Because I am a Lombardi," Clara answered, her voice carrying a chilling, regal authority that echoed through the courtyard. "And Lombardis do not run away when a house is broken. We decide when it falls."

She turned her gaze to Dominic, who was watching her with a mixture of awe and heart-wrenching hope.

"Dominic failed me as a husband," Clara said, her eyes locked onto his. "He broke his vows, he disgraced our marriage, and he allowed enemies into our territory. But he is still the head of the Valente family. And I am still the head of this house."

She looked back at her father.

"If I leave now, Detroit and Chicago will go to war. Hundreds of men will die, and our families will bleed until the federal government locks us all away. I will not let my pain tear apart two empires."

Antonio stared at his daughter, shocked by her absolute strength. After a long silence, the old Don sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly.

"You are stronger than your brothers, Clara," Antonio murmured, reaching up to kiss her forehead. "If you wish to stay, I will respect your choice. But if he hurts you again... I will burn Chicago to the ground myself."

Antonio turned, climbing back into his limousine without another word to Dominic, his convoy roaring down the long driveway and out through the iron gates.
