Chapter 19 - The Terms of Surrender|

That night, a heavy fire crackled in the hearth of the estate's private study.

Dominic sat behind his desk, watching Clara as she sat in the leather armchair across from him. The silence between them was no longer cold—it was heavy with an unspoken understanding.

"Why did you stay, Clara?" Dominic asked softly. "You could have walked away today. Your father would have protected you."

Clara looked into the dancing orange flames of the fireplace.

"I didn't stay for you, Dominic," she said quietly. "I stayed because I refuse to let my life be defined by your mistakes or Lorenzo Moretti’s violence. I am not a victim to be saved, nor am I a trophy to be passed between men."

She reached into her coat pocket, pulling out the same blood-stained yellow envelope containing the divorce papers. She placed it gently on the desk between them.

"I haven't torn them up," Clara said, her dark eyes looking straight into his. "They will stay in your desk drawer. Unsigned."

Dominic felt a sudden catch in his throat. "What does that mean?"

"It means you have a choice," Clara explained softly. "You can continue to be the man you were—a boss who thinks control is love, who uses women to feel powerful, and who takes everything for granted. If you do, I will sign those papers, and no amount of security will keep me here."

She stood up slowly, smoothing the front of her dress.

"Or you can earn me back," she added, her voice barely above a whisper. "Not with diamonds, penthouses, or declarations of war. But by becoming a man worthy of the woman who bled for your name."

Dominic looked at the envelope, then up at his wife. He stood up, walking around the desk until he stood two feet in front of her.

He dropped to one knee on the Persian rug, holding her small hand in his, bowing his head respectfully.

"I will spend every day of the rest of my life earning you, Clara," Dominic promised, his voice choked with emotion. "Starting tonight."

Clara looked down at his dark hair, her fingers lingering gently on his shoulder for a brief, fleeting second before she turned and walked quietly out of the study.
