Chapter 9 - A SON’S FIRST CHOICE

Ethan entered through the library passage.

He was followed by Detective Ortiz and two officers.

Jonathan turned with the gun.

Ethan stopped directly between him and Claire.

“Put it down.”

Jonathan’s hand continued to shake.

Vivian backed toward the staircase.

“You have no authority here,” she shouted.

Detective Ortiz aimed carefully.

“Mr. Whitman, lower the weapon.”

Claire stepped beside Ethan.

“Dad.”

The word felt unfamiliar in her mouth.

Jonathan looked at her.

“I never wanted you involved.”

“You involved me when you disappeared.”

His expression collapsed.

He placed the gun on the floor.

The officers moved in.

Vivian ran.

She reached the second floor before Luke appeared at the top of the stairs.

He had entered through the rear courtyard with another police team.

Vivian stopped between them.

For the first time, there was nowhere left to perform.

She looked down at Ethan.

“I did everything for you.”

Ethan’s voice remained calm.

“You did everything to control me.”

“You would have lost the company.”

“It was never worth what you became.”

Vivian’s face twisted.

She grabbed a framed photograph from the wall and hurled it toward Claire.

Ethan raised his arm.

The glass shattered against him.

The officers pulled Vivian away from the railing.

She screamed that the trust was invalid.

She accused Claire’s mother of manipulation.

She accused Jonathan of theft.

She accused Ethan of betrayal.

No one answered.

Detective Ortiz collected the scattered letters.

The leather folder contained more than correspondence.

It also held original bank records, signed transfers, and a private statement from Thomas Mercer.

The evidence connected Vivian to the stolen foundation money.

Jonathan’s involvement was also documented.

He had helped create the companies but later provided records to Laura.

His cooperation might reduce his sentence.

It would not erase his abandonment.

Claire stood in the library after Vivian was taken outside.

Ethan’s forearm was bleeding from the broken frame.

She found a clean towel and handed it to him without touching him.

“Thank you for coming,” she said.

“I should have protected you before any of this happened.”

“You should have believed me.”

“Yes.”

He did not offer an excuse.

Outside, cameras gathered behind the police barriers.

News of the canceled Mercer wedding had spread across Manhattan.

Vivian was placed into a police vehicle.

Before the door closed, she looked directly at Claire.

“You think you won.”

Claire held her gaze.

“I think you finally lost.”

Vivian smiled.

“Ask Ethan what he signed last night.”

The police door closed.

Claire turned toward him.

His face had gone pale.

“What did you sign?”

Ethan looked toward the recovered trust folder.

“A document my mother brought me after the rehearsal dinner.”

“What document?”

May you like

He answered in a whisper.

“One that may have transferred the entire hotel company to her.”
