Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN IN WHITE

The hotel entered full lockdown.

Uniformed officers covered the lobby, garage, kitchens, loading dock, and private entrances.

Wedding guests gathered beneath the chandeliers without knowing whether they were attending a canceled ceremony or witnessing a crime scene.

Vivian moved through the chaos wearing a white coat taken from the bridal-suite wardrobe.

From a distance, she resembled one of the hotel’s senior event managers.

She kept her head lowered and walked toward the loading dock.

The leather trust folder was hidden beneath the coat.

Claire remained in the archive while Detective Ortiz reviewed the restored footage.

Marissa admitted Vivian had planned the confrontation for three months.

She had studied Ethan’s behavior carefully.

She knew exactly which accusation would make him react without asking questions.

“She said Ethan always defended her first,” Marissa explained.

Claire looked toward him.

Vivian had been correct.

Ethan stood near the cabinet, staring at the floor.

“How long did you know about the trust?” Ortiz asked Marissa.

“Since February.”

“Why was Claire’s mother involved?”

“I don’t know.”

Marissa nodded toward the cabinet.

“Vivian said the answers were in Thomas Mercer’s letters.”

Natalie searched the remaining files.

One envelope carried Claire’s full name.

It had been written years earlier.

Claire opened it with shaking hands.

The letter was from Thomas Mercer.

He explained that Laura Whitman had discovered financial irregularities within the Mercer Foundation.

Millions of dollars intended for housing programs had been redirected through companies controlled by Vivian.

Thomas had planned to remove her from the board.

Before he could complete the process, he became seriously ill.

Laura created the marriage clause as a safeguard.

Thomas believed any woman Ethan trusted enough to marry should receive the power to examine the company independently.

At the bottom of the letter, Thomas had written one final warning.

Vivian will destroy anyone who threatens her control.

Claire lowered the paper.

“This was never only about me.”

Natalie examined a list of shell companies.

“I recognize these vendors.”

“They billed the hotel for renovations that never happened.”

Luke looked at Ethan.

“How much money?”

Natalie calculated quickly.

“More than eleven million dollars.”

A radio message interrupted them.

A woman matching Vivian’s description had been seen near the loading dock.

Detective Ortiz ordered officers to intercept her.

They reached the dock seconds later.

The white coat lay on the pavement.

Vivian was gone.

A catering truck had left during the lockdown using an emergency clearance code.

Natalie checked the authorization.

The code belonged to Ethan.

He stared at the screen.

“I didn’t approve it.”

Luke’s expression changed.

“Your mother still has access to your phone.”

Ethan reached into his pocket.

His phone was missing.

Claire remembered Vivian touching his jacket after the officers arrived.

A location signal appeared on Natalie’s map.

The phone was moving south through Manhattan.

Then a message arrived on Claire’s phone.

It contained a photograph of the leather folder.
