Chapter 5 - THOMAS MERCER’S LAST CLAUSE

The original archive had not been opened in eight years.

Thomas Mercer had ordered it sealed shortly before his death.

Vivian claimed the room contained outdated financial records.

Ethan had never questioned her.

He had inherited the hotel chain at twenty-seven and allowed his mother to remain chairwoman while he learned the business.

For nine years, Vivian controlled every document that reached his desk.

Now the locked archive stood beneath them like a buried confession.

Detective Ortiz requested a warrant.

Natalie informed her that Ethan could authorize entry as the current owner.

Vivian grabbed her son’s arm.

“You cannot open that room.”

Ethan looked down at her hand.

“Why?”

“Your father’s private papers belong to this family.”

“I am this family.”

“You are upset.”

“I slapped the woman I was supposed to marry because I trusted you without thinking.”

His voice broke on the final word.

Claire looked away.

His guilt did not erase what he had done.

It only made him understand it.

Ethan authorized the archive opening.

The group descended through the service elevator with two officers.

Claire had changed into a hotel robe.

She refused Ethan’s jacket when he offered it.

The elevator opened into a concrete corridor.

At the far end stood a steel door with the Mercer crest engraved above the lock.

A discarded white shoe lay beside it.

Claire recognized it as part of Marissa’s wedding-day uniform.

Detective Ortiz drew her weapon.

“Marissa Dane,” she called.

“No one wants anyone hurt.”

A muffled sound came from behind the door.

Ethan entered the emergency code.

The lock released.

Marissa was kneeling beside a metal cabinet.

Documents covered the floor.

An external hard drive rested in her hand.

She tried to run.

The officers stopped her before she reached the elevator.

Vivian remained behind Ethan.

“You foolish girl,” she whispered.

Marissa twisted toward her.

“You said there wouldn’t be police.”

Vivian’s face hardened.

“I never asked you to commit a crime.”

“You paid me to make Claire look unstable.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Marissa began speaking rapidly.

Vivian had promised her fifty thousand dollars.

She was supposed to schedule Owen, provide the temporary access credential, and remove the copied footage.

The staged attack was meant to create a police report before the marriage license could be filed.

Claire would be accused of assaulting an elderly woman.

The Mercer trust’s morality provision would then prevent her from receiving voting authority.

Detective Ortiz recovered the drive.

Natalie connected it to a secure laptop.

The first restored frame appeared.

Vivian stood behind Claire with both hands gripping the wedding gown.

The next frame showed the first violent tear.

Ethan watched his mother destroy the dress piece by piece.

Then the audio began.

Claire’s voice filled the concrete room.

“Please stop.”

Vivian’s answer followed.

“Once Ethan sees me on the floor, he will finish this for me.”

The footage continued.

Vivian lowered herself beside the mirror.

She rubbed her eyes.

She waited.

Then Ethan entered.

The slap appeared from two separate camera angles.

Claire did not look at him.

No one did.

The recording reached its final seconds.

Vivian’s voice could be heard before Ethan arrived.

She was speaking to Marissa through an earpiece.

“After the arrest, bring me Thomas’s original trust.”

Marissa glanced toward the open cabinet.

A leather folder was missing.

Vivian was no longer standing behind Ethan.

The elevator doors were closing.

She had disappeared.
