Chapter 11 - THE BRIDE’S REFUSAL

Claire signed the refusal at seven twelve the next morning.

She did it in the same ballroom where she had been expected to marry Ethan.

The white roses remained on every table.

The uncut wedding cake stood beneath a spotlight.

Three hundred chairs faced an empty altar.

A trust attorney witnessed her signature.

The document gave Claire temporary access to all Mercer financial records.

It did not make her Ethan’s wife.

It did not forgive him.

It simply gave her the ability to uncover the truth.

Ethan watched from the back of the ballroom.

He wore yesterday’s tuxedo.

The sleeve had been cut away where the glass injured him.

Claire wore a simple navy suit borrowed from Natalie.

When the document was complete, Ethan approached carefully.

“I will not ask you to save my company.”

“I am not doing this for you.”

“I know.”

“The foundation money belonged to families who trusted your name.”

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“You keep saying that now.”

His face tightened.

“Because I am beginning to understand how much I refused to know before.”

Claire left him standing beneath the altar.

Natalie and Luke had already assembled a temporary investigation room in the hotel library.

They traced Vane Capital through twelve shell companies.

Each company had been created by the same law office.

Mercer Strategic Counsel.

The firm’s senior partner was Richard Mercer, Ethan’s uncle.

Richard had flown out of New York six hours after the rehearsal dinner.

His private plane was currently in Geneva.

Luke contacted federal investigators.

Claire reviewed invoices from the Mercer Foundation.

Payments for shelters, clinics, and housing projects had been redirected for more than a decade.

Some projects had never existed.

Others had been completed for a fraction of the reported cost.

Natalie found a repeated approval code.

It belonged to Thomas Mercer.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“My father signed these.”

Claire compared the dates.

Several approvals occurred after Thomas had suffered the stroke that left him unable to write.

The signatures were digital copies.

Someone had used his identity while he was dying.

Jonathan recognized the authorization sequence.

“Richard created that system.”

Luke’s phone rang.

The caller was a Mercer board member.

Vivian had been released pending further investigation because prosecutors had not yet filed the financial charges.

She was already inside Mercer Tower.

The emergency board meeting had been moved forward.

It would begin in forty minutes.

Ethan grabbed his coat.

Claire stopped him.

“You cannot walk in there angry.”

“She is taking my father’s company.”

“She wants you emotional.”

He looked at the fading mark on her face.

The warning carried its own shame.

Claire gathered the trust documents.

“We go in with evidence.”

Natalie’s computer chimed.

A new administrator had entered the Mercer server.

Files were being deleted by the hundreds.

The login name appeared on-screen.

ETHAN MERCER.

He was standing beside them.

Someone had stolen more than his authority.

They had stolen his identity.
