Chapter 18 - THE FALSE VICTORY

Claire reached the registry at eight twenty-three.

Smoke drifted from a broken side window.

The fire alarm echoed through the marble lobby.

Employees evacuated onto the street.

Vivian stood inside the records room with a metal container of lighter fluid.

The emergency exit had been chained shut.

She held the city’s duplicate certificates in one hand.

Claire entered alone through the main corridor.

Natalie called after her, but the fire doors closed between them.

Vivian smiled when she saw Claire.

“You always arrive exactly where I need you.”

Claire stopped ten feet away.

“Burning the documents will not erase the film.”

“It will delay the bank.”

“You are going to prison.”

“Prison is temporary.”

“Losing control is what frightens you.”

Vivian’s expression changed.

Claire understood that the entire scheme had never truly been about money.

Money was only proof that Vivian could command people.

Ethan.

Richard.

Luke.

Marissa.

Hotel staff.

Board members.

Even Claire’s wedding had become a stage for Vivian’s authority.

“You could have walked away wealthy,” Claire said.

“I built that family.”

“You hollowed it out.”

Vivian poured lighter fluid across the records table.

“The Mercers would be nothing without me.”

“The Mercers are nearly nothing because of you.”

Vivian struck a match.

Claire pulled the fire alarm lever beside the door.

The ceiling sprinklers exploded.

Water crashed across the room.

The match died between Vivian’s fingers.

The duplicate certificates fell onto the wet floor.

Vivian rushed toward them.

Claire reached them first.

Vivian grabbed Claire’s hair.

Claire twisted away and struck the emergency-release button with her elbow.

The fire doors opened.

Detective Ortiz and two officers entered.

Vivian released Claire and immediately collapsed.

“She attacked me,” she cried.

No one moved.

A city surveillance camera faced the records table.

Its red light remained steady.

Claire looked down at Vivian.

“Not this time.”

The officers arrested her.

At eight twenty-eight, Natalie scanned the duplicate certificates.

At eight twenty-nine, the judge received the filing.

At eight thirty, the bank suspended the Mercer hotel transfer indefinitely.

Claire stepped outside as the clock changed.

Reporters crowded the street.

Luke arrived with the original packet under federal escort.

Ethan stood behind him.

For one breath, it felt finished.

Then Natalie received a call from the board.

The bank had stopped the sale.

But Mercer Hotels had already defaulted on a separate emergency loan Vivian created the previous week.

The lender had seized the company’s operating accounts.

Payroll was due in forty-eight hours.

Twelve thousand employees were about to lose their jobs.

Vivian had prepared for defeat.

Her final weapon was collapse.
