Chapter 14 - THE VEIL

Claire spread the veil across her mother’s desk.
The blue stitches formed a narrow line along the inner border.
She cut one thread carefully.
A strip of waterproof fabric emerged from the hem.
Inside were three microfilm sheets and a small brass token.
Jonathan covered his mouth.
“Laura hid them there.”
Claire placed the microfilm beneath an old document viewer.
The first sheet contained copies of the foundation’s original bank instructions.
The second contained correspondence between Vivian and Richard.
The third contained Thomas Mercer’s signed revocation of Vivian’s authority.
It had been witnessed by Laura two days before Thomas lost consciousness.
Vivian had never legally controlled the foundation.
Every transfer after that date was unauthorized.
The brass token belonged to a private bank vault.
The number matched a branch near Wall Street.
Detective Ortiz contacted the bank.
The vault had been accessed three times since Laura’s death.
The most recent access occurred the previous afternoon.
The registered visitor was Luke Bennett.
Claire turned toward him.
Luke had followed them to Whitman House.
His face changed when he saw the token.
Ethan stepped between Luke and the door.
“What did you take?”
Luke raised both hands.
“I can explain.”
“Then do it.”
Luke admitted Vivian had approached him six months earlier.
She knew his law firm was struggling.
She offered him a partnership in exchange for information about Ethan and Claire.
Luke accepted the first payment.
Claire felt another layer of trust collapse.
“You were working for her.”
“At first.”
“You stood outside the bridal suite and listened.”
“I was trying to record her.”
“After helping her plan?”
Luke looked ashamed.
He had given Vivian Ethan’s travel schedule, legal contacts, and trust questions.
He did not know she planned to destroy the dress or stage an assault.
When he realized how far she would go, he entered Laura’s vault to retrieve evidence.
“What was inside?” Ortiz asked.
Luke opened his briefcase.
A sealed packet rested beneath his laptop.
“I did not give it to her.”
Ethan grabbed the packet.
It contained the original ownership certificates for Mercer Grand, the company’s most valuable hotel.
Thomas had transferred forty-one percent of the property into the Whitman Preservation Trust.
Laura was the original trustee.
After her death, authority passed to Claire.
Claire stared at the certificates.
She had unknowingly owned the deciding interest in the building where her wedding had been destroyed.
Vivian had known.
That was why she insisted the wedding take place at Mercer Grand.
She needed Claire arrested on hotel property.
A criminal allegation could have triggered a trustee-removal petition.
Luke handed Claire a second document.
Vivian had already prepared that petition.
It named Luke as the witness who would testify that Claire attacked her.
Ethan looked at his best friend.
“Were you going to do it?”
Luke’s silence lasted too long.
“I had not decided.”
Ethan struck him.
Luke fell against the desk.
Claire stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Ethan’s fist remained clenched.
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“Violence is what your mother expected from you.”
He lowered his hand immediately.
Luke touched his bleeding nose.
Then his phone rang.
The call came from Geneva.
Richard Mercer was on the line.
May you like
He had one offer.
Give him the ownership certificates before sunrise, or the last witness from Thomas’s hospital room would die.
