Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF A SECRET

Detective Ortiz ordered Claire not to respond.
Vivian was attempting to separate her from police protection.
Claire understood the danger.
She also understood that the folder might contain the last words her mother had ever written about the Mercer family.
Another message appeared.
SIX O’CLOCK.
WHITMAN HOUSE.
Claire’s childhood home had been empty since her mother’s death.
It stood in Brooklyn Heights behind boarded windows and an overgrown iron gate.
Vivian knew exactly where to find the deepest wound.
Ethan asked to see the message.
Claire handed him the phone.
His face tightened.
“She has been inside that house before.”
“How do you know?”
“My father used to visit Laura Whitman there.”
Claire looked at him sharply.
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Luke pulled a photograph from Thomas’s archive.
It showed Thomas Mercer, Laura Whitman, and another man standing in front of Whitman House.
The third man was Claire’s father, Jonathan.
Claire had been told he died in a car accident when she was two.
On the back of the photograph, Laura had written a date.
The date was three years after Jonathan’s supposed death.
Claire felt the floor shift beneath her.
“My father was alive.”
Ethan moved toward her.
She stepped away before he could touch her.
Detective Ortiz examined the photograph.
“Vivian may be using the trust folder to hide a larger crime.”
Marissa was brought upstairs for further questioning.
When shown the photograph, she recognized Jonathan.
“He met Vivian at the hotel last month.”
Claire stared at her.
“That is impossible.”
“He used a different name.”
Marissa wrote it down.
JON VALE.
Natalie searched the guest database.
Jon Vale had occupied a penthouse suite for six nights.
All charges had been waived by Vivian.
Security footage showed a silver-haired man entering the executive elevator.
Claire watched the video repeatedly.
The shape of his face matched the photographs hidden in her mother’s albums.
The man was older.
His shoulders were narrower.
But he was alive.
Ethan sat beside Claire without speaking.
He finally understood that his mother had not simply attacked a bride.
She had constructed an entire world of secrets around both of them.
Detective Ortiz organized a controlled response.
Claire would agree to meet Vivian.
Officers would enter Whitman House through the rear courtyard.
Luke would remain at the hotel with Natalie and secure the financial records.
Ethan insisted on joining the operation.
Claire turned toward him.
“You are the reason she believed this plan would work.”
His face showed the impact of the truth.
“I know.”
“That does not make you my protector now.”
“No.”
He lowered his gaze.
“But I can help stop her.”
At five forty-eight, Claire received one final message.
The photograph showed Vivian inside Whitman House.
A man stood behind her.
His face was partially hidden.
May you like
Claire recognized him anyway.
Her father was holding a gun.
