Chapter 7 - THE WEB WIDENS

I didn’t sleep that night. I sat at the kitchen table, staring at the wall, replaying every conversation, every meeting, every casual comment Marcus had ever made. He had been there when my wife died. He had helped me raise Sophie. He had held my hand when I was at my lowest.
And all that time… he had been working with Vanessa. Planning to destroy me. To take everything I had.
By morning, the situation had grown even worse. Bank accounts frozen. Investigators at my door. Questions about my mental stability. Someone had planted fake medical records, fake emails, fake everything—all designed to make me look like a dangerous, unstable father who had lost his grip on reality.
And because Marcus was my lawyer, he controlled the legal side of everything. He had positioned himself perfectly. If I tried to fire him, it would look like I was hiding something. If I kept him… he would continue to dismantle my life piece by piece.
I needed help. Someone I hadn’t known for years. Someone outside the circle Marcus and Vanessa had carefully woven around me.
I called Lila.
She answered on the first ring, her voice trembling.
“Adrian… I’ve been waiting for you to call. I’m scared. Marcus came to see me last night. He told me if I testified against Vanessa… or if I told anyone what I know about him… he would make sure I regretted it.”
“Lila, listen to me,” I said urgently. “Marcus is the man Vanessa was talking about. They’re partners. They set me up. And they’re not going to stop until they have everything.”
“I know,” Lila whispered. “I’ve known for years. But I was afraid. Adrian… Marcus and Vanessa have been together much longer than you think. They were planning this before she even met you. She chose you. Specifically. Because you were wealthy. Because you were a widower with a child. Because you were vulnerable.”
I closed my eyes, pain stabbing through me. “So none of it was real. Not a single moment.”
“None of it,” Lila said gently. “She practiced every word. Every smile. Every accident that brought you two together. It was all staged. All part of the plan.”
“Why?” I asked, though I already knew the answer. “Why go to such lengths?”
“Your family’s company,” Lila said. “Your inheritance. Everything. They wanted it all. Marriage would have given Vanessa half. Then… once you were gone… they would have taken everything. And Sophie… she was an obstacle. A living heir. So she had to be removed too.”
I gripped the phone, my anger rising hot and fierce.
“They almost succeeded. But they made a mistake. They didn’t know you would help me. They didn’t know I would find the recording. Or uncover the truth.”
“They’re still dangerous,” Lila warned. “Vanessa is in jail, but Marcus is still free. And he knows where everything is. He knows your weaknesses. He knows Sophie. Adrian… he’s not going to let a few pieces of evidence stop him. He has too much to lose.”
“I know,” I said. “Which is why we need to act fast. We need to gather everything we have before he can destroy it all. Lila… will you help me? Will you testify?”
Lila hesitated. I could hear her breathing hard on the other end. Then she said, “Yes. I’ll testify. But Adrian… there’s one more thing you need to know. Something even Vanessa doesn’t know Marcus knows.”
“What is it?”
“Sophie’s real mother,” Lila said slowly. “Your wife… she didn’t die of natural causes. Not really. Marcus was there the night she died. And he’s been holding something back. A secret. That’s why he has so much power over everyone. He knows exactly what happened that night. And he’s been using it to keep you silent ever since.”
The floor seemed to tilt beneath me. I felt dizzy.
“My wife’s death… was it not an accident?”
“Find the file,” Lila whispered. “Marcus keeps it locked away. If you find it… you’ll understand everything. But be careful, Adrian. That file is dangerous. People have gone to great lengths to keep it hidden.”

The call ended. I sat there in silence, staring at the photograph of my wife and daughter on the mantelpiece. I had believed her death was a terrible, tragic accident. But if Lila was right… if Marcus had been involved… then my entire life had been built on a lie.
And the man I had called my best friend might be the reason Sophie never had a mother.
