Chapter 6 - BETRAYAL FROM WITHIN

The police surrounded the cabin swiftly. They called out to Vanessa through megaphones, ordering her to come out and release Sophie. For a long, agonizing hour, nothing happened. Then the door creaked open. Vanessa stepped out alone, hands raised.

She looked calm. Too calm.

“Sophie is inside,” she told the officers, her voice steady and practiced. “She’s scared, but she’s unhurt. I never hurt her. I just wanted to talk to Adrian. I never meant any real harm.”

I pushed past the officers and rushed inside. Sophie sat huddled on a chair, shaking but physically unharmed. I lifted her into my arms, holding her so tightly I’m sure it hurt, and she buried her face against my neck and sobbed.

“She talked on the phone,” Sophie whispered into my ear. “A man. She said… they were going to hurt you, Daddy.”

“I know, baby. I know. I heard. And I have proof.”

I carried her outside just as detectives were reading Vanessa her rights. She caught sight of me holding Sophie, and her mask finally cracked. She glared at me with pure, unmasked hatred.

“You think you’ve won?” she spat. “He’s still out there. And he knows everything. You haven’t seen the last of us.”

Those words chilled me.

“Who is he?” I demanded. “Tell me his name, Vanessa. Before it’s too late.”

She smiled—a terrible, triumphant smile.

“You’ll figure it out. Right before he kills you.”

Vanessa was taken away in handcuffs. I handed over the recording I’d made, certain it would be enough to keep her locked away for decades. The detective in charge assured me she wouldn’t be getting out on bail. I breathed a sigh of relief, believing the nightmare was finally ending.

I was wrong.

Two days later, I received a phone call that turned my world upside down again. It was from my oldest and most trusted friend—Marcus. He was also my lawyer. He had handled every major document in my life. He had introduced me to Vanessa in the first place.

“Adrian,” Marcus said, his voice sounding strange and tight. “I’m so sorry. I’ve been going through the paperwork… and I’ve found something terrible. Someone has been systematically draining your accounts. For months. Hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

My heart sank. “Vanessa.”

“It looks that way,” Marcus said. “But Adrian… the signatures. The authorization codes. They’re yours. Someone has been forging your signature perfectly. And I’m afraid… the evidence points to you having authorized these transfers yourself.”

“That’s impossible!” I shouted. “I never signed anything! Vanessa was the one with access!”

“I know,” Marcus said quietly. “But the forgeries are flawless. And there’s more. Someone has filed documents claiming you’ve been mentally unstable for months. That you’re unfit to care for Sophie. And that… because of the money… you’re under investigation for fraud.”

I gripped the phone, stunned. “Who filed them?”

Marcus hesitated. Then he said, “I did. But only because I was given what looked like legitimate medical documents signed by your doctor. Adrian… I think someone set you up. Completely. From the very beginning.”

I stood in silence, remembering what Vanessa had said on the recording.

*Just like we planned.*

And then I realized something. Marcus had introduced us. Marcus had handled all the legal work. Marcus had access to every single one of my signatures.

“Marcus,” I said slowly. “Who gave you those documents?”

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. Too long.

“Adrian… I can’t tell you that.”

My blood ran cold.

“Marcus… was it Vanessa?”

“Adrian, listen to me—”

“Was it her?” I shouted. “Or was it you?”

Silence. Heavy, terrifying silence.

And then, very quietly, Marcus said words that would haunt me for months to come.

“I’m sorry, Adrian. It was never personal. Just business.”

He hung up.

I stood there with the phone still pressed to my ear, realizing the most terrible truth of all. Vanessa hadn’t just had a partner. That partner was the man I had trusted more than anyone else in the world. My best friend. My lawyer. The man who had stood beside me through every tragedy.

Marcus had been planning this with her all along.
