Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH CHANGES EVERYTHING

Over the next ten days, I worked quietly and carefully. I didn’t go to the authorities Marcus might control. Instead, I went to independent journalists. I found an investigative reporter who specialized in exposing corruption, someone who had no ties to our city or Marcus’s circle. I sent him everything—photographs of the file, the recording of Vanessa’s confession, Lila’s testimony, the altered documents, the timeline of suspicious events stretching back years.
At first, he was skeptical. Then he started verifying. And once he began digging, everything fell into place.
The reporter called me late one evening, his voice tight with excitement.
“Adrian… what you sent me is huge. But what I’ve found on my own is even bigger. Marcus hasn’t just been working with Vanessa. He’s been running a scheme for nearly twenty years. Targeting wealthy families. Gaining their trust. Then… when the moment was right… striking. Inheriting fortunes. Covering tracks. Moving on.”
My stomach twisted. “How many families?”
“At least seven that I can confirm,” the reporter said. “Seven wealthy people who died unexpectedly. Who left everything to people connected to Marcus. Seven accidents that looked perfectly natural… until you line them all up side by side.”
“And Vanessa?”
“She’s been his partner in at least three of them,” the reporter said. “She’s the bait. The one who gains trust. Who marries in. Who becomes part of the family. And Marcus… he cleans up afterward. Handles the paperwork. Signs the death certificates. Makes it all legal.”
I sat in silence, realizing with horror that I hadn’t just stumbled upon a bad situation. I had nearly become the latest victim in a serial scheme that had operated undetected for decades.
“Adrian,” the reporter said seriously. “This changes everything. Marcus isn’t just protecting himself. He’s protecting an entire criminal empire. He will do absolutely anything to stop this from coming out. You need to go into protective custody. You and your daughter.”
“I know,” I said. “But I need to finish this. I need to see him face to face. I need to see the moment he realizes he has lost.”
The reporter paused. Then he said, “The story goes live tomorrow morning. Front page. Every document. Every name. Every connection. By noon tomorrow, everyone will know. The police will have no choice but to arrest him. He won’t be able to run. He won’t be able to hide.”
“Good,” I said. “That’s exactly what I want.”
The next morning, the story broke.
It spread like wildfire. Online. On television. On the front page of every major newspaper. Every detail was there. Every crime. Every victim. Every piece of evidence.
I watched from a safe house as the news unfolded. Police raided Marcus’s office. They searched his home. They found more files. More evidence. More victims.
And then I saw it—live footage. Marcus being led out of his home in handcuffs. His face pale, his expression stunned. The mask had fallen away. And as he was put into the back of a police car, he looked directly into the camera.
He didn’t look defeated. He looked angry. And his eyes seemed to lock right onto mine, through the screen, promising revenge.
My phone rang. It was Lila.
“It’s done,” she said, her voice shaking with relief. “They have everything. They found more files in his home. Adrian… they found proof that he was planning to vanish tonight. To leave the country. To take Sophie… and disappear forever.”
I gripped the phone, cold fear washing over me.
“If the story had broken one day later… he would have been gone.”
“Yes,” Lila said quietly. “You stopped him. Just in time.”

But as I watched Marcus being driven away, one terrible thought kept circling in my mind. He had operated for twenty years. He had escaped suspicion every single time. He had friends in high places. Resources. Money. Influence.
And as long as he was alive… he would never stop coming for us.
