Chapter 14 - THE FINAL PLOT UNFOLDS

Days turned into weeks. Marcus remained in jail, refusing to speak to anyone. Vanessa remained behind bars while her appeal worked its way through the courts. Life began to settle into a fragile rhythm. Sophie and I stayed safe, watched over by Elias and a security detail I had hired. I thought the worst was behind us.

I was wrong.

It started small. Strange noises outside the house at night. A car that seemed to follow me wherever I went. Important documents vanishing from my desk, only to reappear hours later in a different place. Someone was watching. Someone was taunting me.

Then the threats began.

A single white lily—Elena’s favorite flower—left on my doorstep at midnight. No note. Just the flower.

I knew who it was from. Marcus couldn’t send flowers from jail. Vanessa couldn’t. Someone else was sending a message. I know who you are. I know what you’re looking for. And I’m closer than you think.

I increased security. I moved Sophie to a second safe house. I told no one but Elias and Lila where we were.

And still… they found us.

Late one rainy night, I woke up to the sound of breaking glass downstairs. I grabbed the gun I kept locked in the safe beside my bed and moved quietly into the hallway. I signaled to Elias—who was sleeping in the next room—and he nodded, moving toward the stairs.

We found the front door unlocked. The window shattered. And on the kitchen table, sitting perfectly centered, was a single envelope.

I opened it with trembling fingers. Inside was a photograph. It showed Elena, Marcus, and a third man standing together at a business event years ago. The man’s face had been scratched out with black ink. But beneath the photograph, written in handwriting that made my heart stop, were four words:

*STOP LOOKING. OR SUFFER.*

I turned the photograph over. There, in the corner, barely visible, was a name scrawled in pencil: JULIAN VANCE.

I knew that name. Julian Vance was Marcus’s father-in-law. A wealthy, powerful judge. A man who had been like family to me. A man who had stood at Elena’s funeral and told me he would always look after us.

He had been pulling the strings all along.

Marcus had never been the mastermind. He had been the tool. The son-in-law Julian Vance had used to destroy my family, steal our wealth, and cover up decades of corruption. Elena had gotten too close to the truth. So Julian had ordered her silenced. And Marcus—obedient, greedy, terrified—had done it.

Vanessa hadn’t known either. She had been Marcus’s pawn, Julian’s pawn, all of us pieces in a game played by a man who sat in a courtroom by day and plotted murders by night.

My phone buzzed. A blocked number.

I answered.

“Stop digging, Adrian,” Julian said. His voice was calm, cultured, terrifyingly familiar. “Walk away. Take your daughter. Move far away. Live your lives. And I will leave you be.”

“ You killed Elena,” I said. “You ordered her murdered.”

“Marcus made a mistake,” Julian replied smoothly. “He got impatient. But the goal was never to hurt anyone unnecessarily. Your wife… she forced my hand. And now you’re forcing it again.”

“And if I don’t stop?”

“Then something terrible will happen to Sophie,” Julian said, his voice dropping to ice. “Think carefully, Adrian. I have friends everywhere. I have influence. I have power. A man like me… I can make accidents happen. Anywhere. Anytime. Even in a locked, guarded room.”

He paused.

“Walk away. Or bury your daughter.”

The line went dead.

I stood in the darkness, rain lashing against the broken window, and realized the most terrifying truth of all. Marcus was in jail. Vanessa was in jail. But the man truly responsible for everything—the man who had ordered Elena’s death, who had planned to kill Sophie, who had destroyed so many lives—was still free. And he was threatening to finish what Marcus had started.
