Chapter 11 - THE AFTERSHOCKS

In the days that followed, everything seemed to happen at once. Vanessa’s charges were upgraded from attempted murder to conspiracy to commit murder and fraud. Marcus was charged with Elena’s murder along with dozens of other crimes. Bank accounts were unfrozen. My name was cleared. Reporters camped outside my home. Strangers sent messages of support.
But peace didn’t come. Not really.
Every time the phone rang, I flinched. Every time a car passed too slowly, I watched it. Every time Sophie made a sound in the night, I leaped out of bed to check on her. The nightmare might be ending for the rest of the world… but for me, it still felt like it was happening.
I visited Vanessa in jail. She had refused to speak to anyone but me. I walked into that small, cold room and sat across from her. She looked tired. Her hair was pulled back roughly. Her eyes were red-rimmed and dark.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
“Why?” I asked finally. “Why go to such lengths? Why kill Elena? Why try to take Sophie? Why destroy us when we did nothing to you?”
Vanessa looked down at her hands, then slowly lifted her eyes to mine.
“Because Marcus told me I had to,” she said. Her voice was flat. Hollow. “He told me Elena would ruin everything. That she would expose us. That if we didn’t act fast… we would lose everything. So I did what he said. I helped him.”
“You helped him murder an innocent woman,” I said, my voice hard. “You helped him plan to kill a child.”
Vanessa flinched.
“I never wanted to hurt Sophie. That was Marcus’s idea. He said once we were married… we could send her away. To a boarding school far away. But he never told me he planned to… to hurt her.”
“Did you believe him?” I asked. “Really? Did you think you could murder Elena, steal everything, and live happily ever after?”
Vanessa was quiet. Then tears spilled over.
“I loved you, Adrian. Truly. By the time I realized what Marcus really was… it was too late. He had too much power over me. He knew things I had done. He could have destroyed me. So I stayed. And I played my part. And I hated myself every single day.”
“Then why did you swap the labels?” I demanded. “Why did you throw away her medicine? If you didn’t want to hurt her… why did you do it?”
Vanessa hesitated. She looked at me strangely.
“I didn’t.”
I stared at her. “What?”
“I didn’t swap the labels,” she said firmly. “And I didn’t throw away her medicine. That’s what Marcus told me to say if I got caught. But I didn’t do it, Adrian. I swear it. I walked into the kitchen… and everything was already changed. I saw what had happened. And I was terrified. Because I knew Marcus had set me up. He wanted you to hate me. He wanted you to believe I was the monster. So he could step in and be the hero. So he could take everything from both of us.”
I sat there, stunned silent.
“But the video… it showed you.”
“Look at it again,” Vanessa said urgently. “Look closely. The person in the video… they’re wearing the same clothes as me. But look at the hands. Look at the bracelet. It wasn’t me, Adrian. It was Marcus. Dressed as me. He switched everything. And then he told me to go along with it… or he would hurt Lila. So I did. I let everyone believe it was me… because I was protecting my sister.”
I stood up slowly, my mind reeling.
“That’s impossible. Why would he do all that?”
May you like
“Because he knew I was falling in love with you,” Vanessa said, tears streaming freely now. “He knew I was planning to tell you everything. To run away with you and Sophie. To start over. So he decided to destroy me first. To make me the villain. So he could take my place. And finish the job himself.”
I walked out of that jailhouse in a daze. Everything I believed had just been turned upside down. If Vanessa hadn’t done those things… if Marcus had framed her… then who was truly responsible for everything? And how much of what I thought I knew was actually a lie?
