Chapter 12 - AN IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE

I went straight to the journalist who had helped me expose Marcus. I told him what Vanessa had said. We pulled up the kitchen security footage frame by frame. We looked at the hands. The posture. The way the person moved.
And with a sinking heart, I realized she was right.
The person in the video wore a wig. The hands were larger. The wrists were thicker. It wasn’t Vanessa. It was Marcus. He had dressed as her. He had swapped the labels. He had thrown away the medicine. And then he had stood back and watched while everyone blamed the woman he had claimed to love.
He had set her up from the very beginning. He had planned for her to take the fall.
But that created an impossible situation. If I told the truth… if I proved Marcus had framed Vanessa… then Vanessa would be released. And the woman who had been part of a conspiracy to murder my wife—even if she hadn’t committed that specific act—would walk free.
Sophie was terrified of Vanessa. She still woke up crying, saying Vanessa wanted to hurt her. If Vanessa came back into our lives… what would that do to my daughter?
But if I stayed silent… an innocent woman would remain in prison for crimes she didn’t commit. And Marcus—even from behind bars—would have succeeded in destroying her.
I stood at a crossroads. Every choice felt wrong.
I went to see Elias and Sophie. I watched my daughter draw pictures of our family—just her and me. No Vanessa. No Marcus. No one else. She looked up and saw my face.
“Daddy? Why do you look so sad?”
I sat beside her.
“I have a very hard choice to make, baby. A woman is in jail… but she didn’t do the bad things everyone thinks she did. But if I tell the truth… she might come back. And I know you’re scared of her.”
Sophie was quiet for a long time, staring at her drawing. Then she looked at me with wisdom far beyond her years.
“Did she throw away my medicine?”
“No,” I said. “It was her friend. The bad man.”
Sophie thought some more.
“Then she didn’t do it. So she shouldn’t be in jail. But… can she stay far away? Just for a little while? Until I’m not scared anymore?”
My throat tightened. I hugged her.
“Yes. She can stay far away. And we will never let anyone hurt you. I promise.”
I walked out of that room knowing what I had to do. It wouldn’t be easy. It wouldn’t be popular. Many people would hate me for it. But I couldn’t let an innocent person suffer… even if she had once been part of something terrible.
Vanessa had made terrible choices. She had been part of a conspiracy. She had lied to me. She had pretended to care. But she hadn’t tried to kill my daughter. And she hadn’t swapped those labels.
Marcus had. And he had used her as a pawn.

I picked up the phone and called the journalist.
“Go through the video again,” I said. “Find every detail that proves it wasn’t her. Prepare the evidence. We’re going to clear her name.”
