Chapter 5 - HIDDEN TRUTHS

The police arrived within minutes. I gave them everything—the video, Lila’s testimony, the story of the previous family, the location of the mountain cabin. Officers moved fast, setting up roadblocks and heading toward the cabin. But I didn’t stay behind. I drove up that mountain road myself, faster than safety allowed, gripping the steering wheel until my hands ached.

I reached the cabin first. It sat isolated among pine trees, far from neighbors, exactly the kind of place someone would choose to hide a secret. I parked down the road and approached quietly, keeping to the shadows.

Voices carried through the thin walls. Vanessa’s voice, sharp and angry. And then Sophie’s—small, crying, exhausted.

“Why do you hate me?” Sophie asked, and the question tore at my heart.

Vanessa’s reply came cold and cruel.

“I don’t hate you, Sophie. You’re just… in the way. If you weren’t here, your father and I would be happy. We would be married. We would have everything. But you… you’re always there. Taking his attention. Taking his love. It should have been mine. All of it.”

“I love my daddy,” Sophie whispered.

Vanessa laughed, a terrible hollow sound.

“Love doesn’t matter. Money does. Power does. And soon… none of this will matter anyway. Once I get what I want from him… I won’t need you anymore.”

I gripped the hidden EpiPen in my pocket, my blood turning to ice. What exactly did that mean?

I heard movement inside. Vanessa pacing. And then I heard something else—a third voice. Faint. Crackling over a phone call.

“Is everything ready?” a man asked.

“Yes,” Vanessa replied. “He’s coming. He’ll do exactly what I say. He cares too much about the brat.”

“And then?” the man asked.

“Once he signs everything over… we get rid of both of them. Make it look like an accident. Fire. Nobody will ask questions. Then we take everything and disappear. Just like we planned.”

I leaned against the wall, my breath catching. There was someone else. She hadn’t been working alone.

Vanessa continued, her voice dropping lower, but I heard every word.

“Just don’t mess up this time. The last time… the girl didn’t die fast enough. That’s why we had to run. This time… make sure Adrian doesn’t survive.”

My knees nearly gave way. The previous family… it hadn’t been Vanessa alone. There was a partner. Someone who had been with her then, and someone who was waiting for her now.

I pulled out my phone, hands trembling, and began recording every word through the open window. I needed proof. Real proof. Not just a video of swapped labels. Proof of conspiracy. Proof of murder.

“Be careful,” the man on the phone said. “If Lila talked… the police might already be on their way.”

“Lila knows nothing,” Vanessa said dismissively. “She’s weak. And once we finish this… we’ll deal with her too. She shouldn’t have stuck her nose where it didn’t belong.”

Footsteps sounded from inside, coming toward the door. I stuffed my phone into my pocket and stepped back just as Vanessa pulled the door open and stepped outside to look around. She scanned the trees, her face hard and focused. She didn’t see me standing behind the thick trunk of an old pine.

She went back inside.

I stood there in the shadows, my mind racing. There was a partner. A plan to kill me. A pattern stretching back years. And somewhere out there, that partner was waiting.

I pulled up the recording on my phone. It was all there. Every threat. Every confession. Every terrible detail of the plan.

But as I listened, one phrase kept repeating in my mind.

*Just like we planned.*

Vanessa hadn’t simply wanted me gone. She and this mysterious partner had been planning this for a very long time. Which meant… she hadn’t accidentally chosen me. She hadn’t simply fallen in love.

She had targeted me. Deliberately. Carefully. From the very start.

And as sirens began wailing in the distance, growing louder by the second, I realized with a shudder that terrified me more than anything else: I still had no idea who her partner was. Or how close he had been watching me this entire time.
