Chapter 9 - THE SISTER NO ONE MENTIONED|

Stefan's younger sister, Katarina Volkov, had disappeared twenty-seven years earlier after a family dispute involving their father's estate.
The official account claimed she had moved abroad and cut off contact. Stefan had spent years trying to find her, but their mother insisted Katarina wanted nothing to do with the family.
Now the date on the hospital record suggested something different.
"Could my mother and your sister have known each other?" Sarah asked.
"They were close before everything happened," Stefan replied. "Katarina supported Maria when our family opposed the relationship."
"Then maybe she helped her escape."
It was a theory, not proof. They agreed to pursue it carefully.
Elena located an old passport application filed under Katarina's name. The photograph showed a woman with dark hair and a distinctive crescent-shaped scar near her left eyebrow.
A recent adoption registry contained a sealed file associated with a woman whose birth date matched Katarina's. The file could not be opened without a court order, but its listed birthplace was Toledo, Ohio.
Sarah's birthplace.
For the first time, the investigation reached beyond her mother's disappearance and into her own childhood.
She remembered foster homes, social workers, and a childhood photograph in which a woman stood outside a school fence, watching her from a distance.
Sarah had always assumed the woman was another student's relative.
She searched through the box of belongings she had saved from childhood. Beneath school certificates and old postcards, she found the photograph.
On the reverse was a handwritten note:
She has your eyes. I will keep watching until it is safe.
There was no signature.
Sarah took it to Stefan.
He stared at the photograph for so long that she feared he had stopped breathing.
"That's Katarina."
"Are you sure?"
"She has the scar. And I recognize the coat."
"Why would your sister watch me without contacting me?"
"Perhaps she believed someone was still searching for you."
They hired a licensed investigator to locate the woman connected to the adoption record. The trail led to a small town in Pennsylvania, where a retired schoolteacher named Katherine Vale had lived for fifteen years.
The investigator confirmed that Katherine had left town six weeks earlier.
Her house was empty, but a neighbor remembered her receiving a package from New York.
The return address belonged to Daniel Whitmore's law office.
Sarah felt anger replace her fear.
"He knew where she was."
"Or he knew how to reach her," Elena corrected. "We must not confuse suspicion with proof."
That evening, Sarah received a handwritten envelope at the hotel.
Inside was a single sentence.
Your father is telling you only the part of the story that makes him innocent.
Beneath it was a photograph of Stefan standing outside the old Volkov residence on the night Maria disappeared.

Someone had circled a second figure in the background.
The woman appeared to be carrying a baby.
